I became a fellow of the American College of Obstetricians an Gynecologist on 11/1/2017. This membership is to be renewed annually. Membership gives access to journal articles and ACOG publications. Regardless of the date I pay, my membership expires always expires on October 31st. I paid today (12/28/2023) and my membership expires again on 10/31/2024. I am being charged for months that I did not have access to membership benefits.

      Business Response

      Date: 02/13/2024

      Good afternoon,

In my capacity as the ACOG Senior Director, Membership Strategy, I am responding to the complaint that was filed by *********************, an ACOG member. The claim is that a membership dues payment was made without access to member benefits. That is not the case. ****************** annual membership renewal cycle is November to October. While the fees are due Oct. 31st of every year, ************** has a grace period of 3 months to pay before membership is terminated. So when payment was received on 12/28/2023, she still had full access to her benefits. The membership dues are not prorated based on when payment is received because the membership is still active with fully accessible benefits.

Thank you for the opportunity to address this matter.

      Kind regards,

      **********************************************, Senior Director, Membership Strategy

I previously asked for a payment plan for my membership dues and was advised by membership that as of 2020 all fellows are granted a 90 day grace period before membership expires. However the way that ACOG updates its website does not allow anyone to access membership services during this grace period so technically it's not a grace period if you still cannot access any services of membership and you cannot file any complaints or grievances during this grace period. Also because ACOG refuses to allow for any situation in which a member needs a payment plan for their membership fees if the member needs to renew their board certification they do not communicate with ABOG that the membership is currently within a grace period which prevents members from doing their MOC (as it has done in my case). This to me seems like ACOG is participating in a bait and switch policy in which it advises members that they are under a grace period and the membership has not been cancelled when in reality the membership is indeed cancelled and not under a grace period which is dishonest and disingenuous.
