I visited Bayhealth Total Care on 8/31/23. I came in for a chest infection, in need of antibiotics. When I entered the facility, I provided my insurance information to the desk. While in the appt, Bayhealth wanted to do an x-ray. I didn't want it but the woman was excited to use a new x-ray machine in their new facility. She told me DE had a new balance bill law so I wouldn't have to pay anything. I asked for clarification-did that mean insurance would pay their share and I would pay nothing out of pocket, and she said yes. My mom was a witness. I agreed to the x-ray and of course it was negative. I received a bill for $437.29 and assumed insurance hadn't processed yet. When I got a 2nd bill, I called Bayhealth. The rep told me she had similar calls from others like me who visited this new Bayhealth facility in Milton. No one called me back to resolve the issue. I contacted Bayhealth on multiple additional phone calls but no resolution. Finally, I spoke to someone in patient advocacy who sent me a letter saying they were standing by their bill. When I spoke to him on the phone about his letter, he apologized for the inappropriate conduct of his medical professional, but he told me his lawyers would say that I received what I went to Bayhealth for. I guess Bayhealth is more about lawyers than patient care. It is inappropriate for Bayhealth's medical professionals to be actively attempting to convince patients to have procedures they don't really need or want by telling them they won't be billed personally for the procedures. I will not return to Bayhealth because it is now a trust issue.

After the letter, Bayhealth sent my full account to collections. I contacted my health insurance provider and found out how much I would have owed for the visit minus the x-ray. I paid Bayhealth exactly what I would have owed - $127.29.

I have cautioned friends, family and colleagues to stop using Bayhealth. You should be able to trust in your health care provider.
