My conscience will not allow me stay quiet on this issue. I prefer to give my business to local merchants, and was looking for a tree to replace the hibiscus that had been eaten by iguanas. The salesman recommended a small oleander tree and I bought it. I also asked about ixora, another plant that iguanas don’t eat, but he brought out the oleander and told me it would do the job of not being eaten. The next day I learned the oleander is to small animals and potentially harmful to humans. I knew Johnny Mangos has a final sale policy, but I pleaded for an exchange since I live in a very dog friendly, gated senior community. Two days after my purchase, I returned the oleander tree and my request for an exchange was denied. The manager, *****, told me that I should have done my research. I responded that I knew about plants that iguanas wouldn’t eat, but I had no idea about their toxicity and no reason to research the toxicity. ***** informed that under Florida law, it is illegal to give any information about the toxicity of plants, they could be fined for doing so, and that buyers should research before buying. Then I called the Florida Department of Agriculture, and was informed by phone and in writing, there is no such statute that prevents nurseries from disclosing the toxicity of oleander. The rep who gave me this information told me that Johnny Mangos should have done diligence and informed that I had other choices that are less toxic to the environment. When I informed Johnny Mangos of the statement provided by the Dept. of Agriculture, the manager said “the Department of Agriculture doesn’t know everything.” After telling me that I had to wait one week until I get an answer from the out-of-town owner, I demanded an immediate refund and got it. I am sharing this information to warn others how Johnny Mangos is not concerned about the safety of their customers, and that making money seems more important than working with the community in a reasonable manner.
