      My husband and I entered this shop on 2/23/23. Upon entering the man behind the counter immediately started to follow us around. I stopped at a display containing wooden puzzle boxes. The man stopped right at my shoulder, practically breathing down my neck. He was saying that I had a puzzle box, which I already knew what I was looking at. He then told me that there was a secret latch on the side of the box. I turned the box sideways to look and a piece fell off the box. He yells at me that he told me to be careful and 'by the way, you just broke it and you can't leave until you pay for it.' I was shocked by his demeanor. I looked on the floor and found the piece that fell off. He said 'there is another piece by your foot and you are going to pay for it.' My husband and I were totally stunned - he began grabbing a sign on the display showing that 'if you break it, you bought it, etc.' I explained that legally he cannot make someone pay. I am not blind to my legal rights and know that these shops carry insurance that covers their products. I know that legally he cannot do this, and told him such. I even found an article on the internet to show him, in which he stated 'he could not see it, and he couldn't read it!' He walked toward the door as if to keep us in the store. I insisted I was not paying. He continued to say we had to if we wanted to leave. As not to cause anymore issues, my husband said he would just pay the bill and we could move on. The man then went behind the counter and said it would be $25. He actually charged almost $30, but never provided a receipt. I continued to say it was not legal to do what he was doing. I left the store and called the local Sheriff's Office. They arrived and told me that he was not legally able to do what he did, and if we had called while in the store, he would have been cited for false imprisonment for not letting us leave until the item was paid for.
