I received a call soliciting me for medical insurance policies from LRA Insurance, *****************, and I politely decline any information. The operator insisted and repeated my decline. She continues and I again declined, wanting to be taken off the call list. She then proceeded to ask sarcastically "are you r-word?" And proceeded to put me on hold. I stayed on to try and speak to a mananger but was left on hold until they hung up.

      Business Response

      Date: 01/18/2023

Good morning.  Our business utilizes voice over IP phones that are internet based.  It appears that someone is spoofing our phone number and making spam calls.  I've checked with our phone provider if there is anything we can do to prevent this and below was his response.  I apologize to Mr. ********* and the hassle these spammers are causing him.  We have offices in ******* and Cocoa and none in South *******.  We also do not sell individual health insurance.  Finally, we would never make fun of anyone or use inappropriate language to a potential client.  We have been in busy for 36 years and we wouldn't be in business that long if that is the way we treated people.  Again, I apologize to Mr. ********* and I wish there was more I could do to stop these spammers.  Again below is what my phone company suggested.  I'm available if more information is needed so please have ********************** contact me.  ************************************, President ***************************** ************, *************************************************

Here are some best some best practices on call spoofing/handling are posted on ********* website as well as the FCC's website.  A few best practices that we recommend are:

Be skeptical of generic greetings, such as ones that address you with Dear customer, as opposed to your real name.
Avoid answering unknown numbers, as scam callers will regularly use unknown numbers.
Pay attention to the callers tone of voice, and avoid giving information to a caller who seems pushy or demanding. This is a tactic employed by scammers to make matters appear urgent, thereby manipulating the human agency to react.
Be wary of the reason a caller gives you for needing your personal information. If the caller says they need it for an event you have never previously heard of, hang up immediately.
Dont stay on the phone line. Trust your gut if you have any concerns regarding the legitimacy of the caller. Hang up immediately.
When in doubt, call the advertised business phone number back.  A simple solution is to call the listed business back to confirm they are who they say they are.
