    Pump Organ Restorations

    Hi, ***** --

    Thanks for your email.

My apologies for not keeping you up to date about your organ.

I've been keeping your organ here in the shop in the hope of finding two sub-bass replacement reeds. What's a sub-bass? Only about 2% of all pump organs have a sub-bass. A sub-bass represents the foot pedals on a pipe organ. When activated by pulling out the sub-bass stop k*** on your organ, it engages a set of a much larger set of bass reeds.

These sub-bass reeds are about twice the size of an organ's typical bass reeds. Most people who own a pump organ that has a sub-bass don't even use it. One reason is it draws quite a bit of suction from the organ's bellow system to operate it.

If you have an organ that has a weak bellow system, the last thing you want to do is use the sub-bass unit. It's also the primary reason most pump organs do not come with a sub-bass unit. Most pump organ owners don't even know what a sub-bass unit is, so they never use it.
