I recently graduated from the University of Georgia in Spring of 2022. I received an email through my student account through UGA. It was presented as an opportunity to work with UNICEF remotely and get paid $550 a week. I spoke with **************** which is actually the name of a professor that works with the organization. I assume that someone disguised themself as the Professor. I received a check in the mail and cashed it at my bank at the time,WellsFargo. The check was not detected as a fraudulent check until I discovered what was really going on and reported it to the bank immediately! By this time I had sent money to what I believed were two orphanages and purchased two $500 gift cards, but it was too late. The thief was now asking for the back of the cards but something did not feel right! I called my mom and she told me to contact the school. I spoke to a lady who told me to contact my bank. She said that someone had been sending out emails to recent graduates trying to con individuals out of their money. I went into my local bank despite them telling me that I would have to make an appointment even though I was dealing with fraud. I spoke to someone who did not handle fraud cases but connected me with someone in the company that did. I was given a number to contact the fraud department. At the time I felt relieved because I now had a case open to resolve the issue. The lady I spoke with made it sound like everything would be okay and somehow they would get to the bottom of it. Instead they denied my claim within the same week and hounded me to pay back the money. I was taken advantage of when I was simply just trying to do what I could to support myself as a new graduate! I had to pay back about $2,000 dollars that I didn't have to begin with! It really set me back mentally and financially. I will be filing a complaint to both **************** who did nothing to help me resolve the issue and UGA who allowed my student email to be obtained by thieves.

      Business Response

We are sorry to learn that our recent graduate has been a victim of an Internet crime, but the University of Georgia cannot indemnify victims of an Internet crime or reimburse them for their losses. Unfortunately, these types of scams do exist, and that is why our *************************** periodically issues email notifications to our students, faculty and staff to educate them on fraudulent employment offers and check/gift card scams. Outside of legitimate open-records requests required by the State of Georgia law, the University does not share or sell email addresses with external vendors.

After searching records at both the University ***************** as well as the ***************************, we are unable to locate any record of the graduate having raised this incident to University authorities. We encourage her to file a police report with the University ***************** regarding this incident. With a police report, the claimant's financial institutions or renters/home insurance might reimburse her for losses.

We also encourage the claimant to file a report with the University's *************************** by following the procedures at *****************************************************************************. By doing so, we can assist the claimant with investigating the incident and help her take steps to prevent similar fraud in the future. Any information discovered by the *************************** will be provided to the University ***************** to support their review of the matter.

Beyond encouraging the claimant to take these steps and supporting the claimant as described above, there is nothing further that the University of Georgia can do.

This complaint has been delegated to and as such is being answered by *************************, ****************************************************.

The UGA Bookstore staff has been in touch with the customer to further review this issue and as per the attached email communications the shipping charges were immediately returned to the customer and a gift card for $20, more than the value owed, has been issued to the customer.  This gift card is being issued to more quickly respond since a check would have to go through ******* Corporate and would take longer to deliver.  Per the attached emails, this was agreeable to the customer, but please let us know if there is any way we can be of further assistance.
