I have tried to contact Hamilton County EMS several times in the past 2 months after receiving my EMS bill from getting hurt in December 2023 skating. No one has returned calls. I was trying to work out payments with them. Friday, 05-04-2024, I made a payment towards the bill on there online bill pay since I could never get a person. Today, 05-6-2024, I had a refund issued of my payment. I called and spoke to a lady finally and she says they don’t take payments. My insurance did send a check in January made out to me for the amount owed, unfortunately our washer/dryer broke and I had to use those funds to buy new ones. The lady said I had the check and should have sent it to them. I explained it was not made out to them nor had I received any correspondence until mid March from them. I told her I had to make payments. She again said they do not work out payments or anything because of the amount, it’s $1459.00. I can not find anywhere a policy to support this. I told her just send to collections then. I attempted and did put money towards the bill but they sent it back as a refund. My question is legally can they refuse my payment? I feel this can be legal, it is not in collections. I am trying to pay towards my debt.

Good Morning!  In response to the complaint concerning a bill.  The patient's insurance company did make the payment to the patient.  For this certain insurance company this is routine. The invoice the patient received did state at the bottom of the page "it is possible your insurance company paid you directly, please remit payment to HEMS to avoid collections.  Once an account is turned over to collections, then the patient will need to contact the collection company to discuss payments.

Below is part of our frequently asked questions.

I received a check from my insurance company for ambulance transport, what do I do?
If HEMS transported you or a covered family member to the hospital, HEMS will bill your insurance company directly. Many insurance companies send the reimbursement check directly to the patient. If you should receive a check for this, please sign the back side of the check and forward it to:

    Hamilton EMS, **** *** *** ******* ******* ***********

If you keep the check, HEMS will continue to bill you for the service provided and if you sign the check and keep it or deposit it we consider this a theft of services and will attempt to collect what is due for our service through our court systems or by collections.

    Hi,
My name is ****** **. My son and I visited Hamilton Medical center Emergency room for hot water burn.
The doctor there referred us to Well Star burn center in Atlanta GA. So, we left for Atlanta. My son **** *** was treated in Atlanta Burn center.
However, we received a bill from the Hamilton ER for $1241.43. I don't understand why it is so high. The bill that we received from the Burn center was lower than this amount. I want to know where and why are those charges. What services cost more than one thousand.
All we received in the ER that day was the address to the burn center. The doctor did remove his band-aid to take a look, then put it back on. The doctor in the ER decided that he should go to the burn center. He did not think he can treat it himself.
The bill that we received statement number is *********. statement date is 10/15/2022. Day of service is 11/212021. Encounter #: **********. Provider: K*****, John C MD. Amount due: $1241.43.
Paying more than one thousand for a referral is really unfair. I think Hamilton Medical Center Emergency services should reevaluate there price of services for us.

The patient's parent needs to speak with the hospital not the ambulance service.  He has the wrong department.
