****** began renovating our bathroom in the spring of 2023. It was supposedly completed, except for the punch list by fall of 2023. We have made numerous attempts to have him return and complete the job. He either doesn’t respond, or if he does, he doesn’t show and doesn’t respond. Now we have major issues which should have been addressed, including shower leaks. Painting of the walls and finishing details are not done. The instant water heater still doesn’t work. Floor tile is uneven leading to fear of tripping. Other miscellaneous items need to be repaired or completed.. We had another company come and check out our bathroom. They have advised us to not use the shower for fear the leaks will weaken the studs and collapse the dining room ceiling. They have indicated the bathroom needs to be gutted to repair leaks. A 6-8 week job. We would like our money refunded so we can have the job completed by a more reputable company.

    Business Response

Please find attached Response to Complaint, Contract for bathroom remodel, change order for deck, and additional invoices that indicate the many additional projects and changes made throughout the project and several pictures.

Firstly, Striving for Perfection would like to apologize for any inconvenience/distress/problems that was created by numerous factors that caused a breakdown client/company relationship. Things could have been handled differently in certain areas.

We at Striving for Perfection would like to think we take great care to ensure important matters are properly processed and taken care of on our projects. During this project there were many factors in the delay for example: Bathroom Remodel Contract signed 5-9-2023, project delayed due to special order of materials which then lead the project to not actually start until the beginning of June 2023, leading into a Change Order May 24, 2024 where we completed a 5' x10' deck to the front entry (this also took time to find the materials the customer wanted), after which lead to changing and adding to how the customer wanted the bathroom project done (all of which was done to the customers specification's), but there were also other things needing to be repeated with the project because already laid tile would need to be replaced or reset due to the customer not saying off and out of the bathroom after the process was completed, the tankless water heater was looked at and determined the issue was the setting being Celsius and SFP indicated the customer would need to refer to the manual so that it could be changed to Fahrenheit, we also completed additional projects such as popcorn ceiling removal in living room, drywall repair and painting of living room, dining room, and hallway. All of which was completed to the satisfaction of the customer. We have changed, added, taken out and put back into the best of our ability to accommodate customer. Problems did arise when Striving for Perfection's owner **** fell off a roof on August 12, 2023, had a left hand and elbow surgery in September 2023, and the right-hand surgery in December 2023. All necessary for our company to run.

When speaking with the customer in October 2024 for a punch list to be completed to satisfy all parties, never was a major leak mentioned that was to cause the whole project to be redone. Attached is a photo dated 9-14-23 this is where the customer did not was a lip or seam between the shower and the main bathroom. The only thing mentioned was by the wife that they could only shower in one area of the shower. The customer never indicated they wanted the whole bathroom waterproof, the only area in the bathroom that was sealed properly for water is IN the shower.

There were also days Striving for Perfection did show up and was sent away. There were many obstacles to list? With all due respect the customers were difficult to please.

    Complaint: ********

I am rejecting this response because:
The punch list was not completed.  ****** sent ****** to check what we felt was needing done.  He took pictures and indicated he would get with ******.  ****** and ****** did return to begin working on the list; however, ****** informed us his son was graduating from college the end of May, and they would not be able to return until after that.  We were unable to make contact afterwards.  Text messages and phone calls were not returned (we have the history on our phones).  We finally looked on the business website where we found the office number.  After talking to the assistant, an appointment was made for ****** to come about two weeks later on a Monday.  He texted the morning of the appointment that something had come up so he would not be coming.  He said he would be here the following Wednesday—again a no show but promised Friday morning.  We waited unto about 2:00 when we sent a note saying we were going to the grocery store.  He has not been in contact since, hence the complaint to the BBB.
The idea that we were uncooperative and hard to work with is disturbing.  On Fridays when ****** presented receipts and bill for work done that week, he was paid promptly.  We did not walk on the tile unless we were told it was okay.  The work of the tile shows inconsistency in the installation.  We did not want the entire bathroom waterproofed.  We want the shower to stop leaking into the dining room.  When work began on the bathroom, we moved downstairs to our guest bedroom which has a bathroom attached.  There was no need to enter or use the upstairs bathroom.  We were accommodating when ****** fell off the roof.  Also, when his crew became sick and unable to work on site.  We also agreed to him returning after his son’s graduation in Michigan.
We asked another company to check the project and give us an estimate of what needed to be done and the cost.  At their advice, we have not used the shower in the bathroom.  Their concern was the weakening of the joists that would cause the dining room ceiling to collapse.  Their estimate to repair and complete the project is $27,000 which will have to come from our retirement IRAs.
The new company stated that the tile will have to be removed along with the floor warmers.  The wall tile will also have to go.  The shower floor tile will have to be replaced so they can properly waterproof the floor, (actually the only area needing waterproofing).  The floor in the shower has a dip that creates a small pond the never drains accept to the dining room ceiling.  They will probably have to remove sheet rock to determine why the on-demand water heater is basically a wall decoration.  Besides all that there are numerous code violations that have already been pointed out to us and perhaps more to discover.
    Photos can be provided.
    Sincerely,
