Last March as I was driving my engine light turned on. I decided to stop by a mechanic I saw on the side of the road to see if he can see what the issue is. I was there for a while as he was attempting to diagnose the issue. At some point he went to the back room. After around 30 additional minutes of me waiting, I go in and ask if there is an issue with the car or if I am good to go, and he said there was a severe issue that needed to be fixed immediately or else the car will give out. I must note that my car was driving perfectly fine and I just stopped by the mechanic out of caution when I saw the engine light. He really panicked me and made me think this is very crucial. He said the mass air flow sensor had to be changed immediately. He said he called the dealership of my car make and they said the part was a $1000. Mind you I never actually saw him call anyone, but that's what he claimed to have been doing in the back room. He said I have to give him a $250 deposit and he will order the parts from the dealership immediately and have them within 48 hours and will give me a call. I ended up doing that and I filled a form where I gave him my phone number and email so he can contact me once he gets the parts and said to be on the lookout for a phone call within the next couple of days. Five days went by and I heard nothing. I ended up giving him a call and when he answered he said that they tried to call and read me a number I know he made up on the spot as the number he said had a fake area code that isn't even in Georgia. He said that the dealership for some reason never shipped him the parts and it would take another week. I decided to go to the dealership myself. They said they never spoke to such a man and told me that the part he was trying to sell me is actually worth around $260 and not a $1000. They ran tests on my car and there was absolutely nothing wrong with the air flow sensors. I requested a refund and he said he isn't able to. He never called after.
