My daughter's school SAIL, provides before and after school care. My daughter is enrolled in after school care because school is released at 3:30 PM EST and my husband and I don't get off work until 5 PM EST. The week of ************, 2022, parents were charged for the full week of childcare even though the school was closed for a mini Fall break on *********************, where the school was open only 2 days. When I questioned why we were charged for the full week, $70, rather than a prorated rate for only the 2 days the service was offered due to the school being closed, I was told that the full amount is due in order to save my child's space. As a parent who works, not only is the school forcing me to pay for a service that they can't provide because the school is closed, I'm also forced to find alternative care during those days for which I have to pay someone for too. The school has always prorated this rate in the past for days in which the school is closed. There is no mention of this on their "Beyond the Bell Policies and Procedures Handbook". It only mentions that parents are responsible for the full week, regardless if the child uses the service or not (which makes sense because I'm paying to have the service offering). On the other hand, you can't charge me for a service that you are not providing because you are closed- that is unethical.

    Business Response /* (1000, 5, 2022/11/04) */
The School for Arts-Infused Learning offers Before and After school care for families. The service begins before school at 6:30am. It ends after school at 6:00pm. At the beginning of the school year, parents are provided a copy of both the handbook and a calendar that lists the weeks payments are to be made. We have adjusted our policy so that they are similar to surrounding day care facilities in order to be competitive. With this adjustment, parents are told they will be expected to pay for services even if they are not used as a way to keep their spot in the system. Below is the explanation located on page 3:

"Do to our low-cost enrollment, payment for the entire week is required whether your scholar attends all days of the entire week or not in order to save your place."

The published calendar clearly designates the weeks the parents are responsible for payment.

Parents will not be charged a Beyond the Bell fee during the weeks highlighted in green. Invoices will be billed on Mondays which are highlighted in red.

The parent signed the handbook acknowledging their responsibility on *************. It is unfortunate that the complainant is unhappy but it is my hope that this explanation will clear up any confusion.

The calendar document and the fact that parents have to pay for days school is not in session is not included in their handbook. Here is the direct link to this handbook in question that is does not state or include what the school is referring to: https://www.sailga.org/ourpages/auto/2018/9/13/40750840/FY23%20Beyond%20The%20Bell%20Handbook%20%20%20%20Revised%2005.31.2022.pdf?rnd=1655122633068

If you would, please review the attachment that contains the handbook. The first page was included as it is a letter that was hand delivered to each parent, Therefore, it is not part of the posted handbook.
