    On May 8, 2025 I arrived at The Beach Waikiki Hostel by **** in ****** at approximately 10:3010:45 AM. Since my room was not yet ready for check-in, I left two bags with the hostel, in their designated luggage storage:A drawstring bag containing three pairs of shoes, and A bag with toiletries and makeup.I left the hostel between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM to get a broken zipper fixed. When I returned, I went to my room to drop off the duffel bag I had taken with me, then returned to retrieve the two bags from the luggage storage area.The luggage storage was an open kitchen area that was not secured and easily accessible to anyone. Upon returning, I discovered that my drawstring bag with the shoes was missing.I immediately reported the theft to the front desk, but instead of receiving proper assistance, they told me to check my room again, even though I had just come from there. I filed a police report for the stolen property.The manager later agreed to refund me for the stolen shoes as a gesture of goodwill, but also pointed out that I had signed the hostels terms and conditions stating all guests are responsible for their own belongings. The manager made it clear that the refund was not an admission of liability.I was never informed at check-in that valuables could be stored in a more secure location, such as a locked closet. If I had known, I would not have placed my shoes in the open kitchen area.The manager also stated that if I left a negative review, they would reverse the refund, which made me feel silenced and intimidated from sharing my honest experience.Furthermore, the manager said the hostel would not cooperate with the police investigation, which is concerning regarding their commitment to guest safety.
