I took my daughter to Maui Memorial Medical Center on 3-31-23 for abdomen pain. They did several tests but didn't identify the issue and sent us home. They sent an invoice dated 4-11-23 for $3,023 but no record of them running it through my health insurance even though they took a copy of my card. I called them and then they sent me a new statement dated 5/17/23 which showed our insurance company paying $5,475 (significantly more than the original bill) and now I still have to pay $2,963. I sent records back to the Maui Memorial Medical Center showing the data and asking them to explain. They responded with sending me a new invoice for $3,023 dated 6-12-23 with a note if we don't pay within 15 days our credit rating will be affected. I'm trying to work with Maui Memorial Medical Center but they are not even trying and sending me threats. My request is that Maui Memorial Medical Center correctly follows my insurance and I pay 80% of $3,023 and my insurance company pays the remaining 20%. Currently we have to pay $8,438 which is $5,415 more than our billed amount! How can they get away with this, especially when they did not figure out why my daughter was in so much pain.

Thank you for your feedback. Our Patient Relations team has reached out to you directly via phone and email in an effort to resolve your concern. In addition to your hospital bill, you may have received bills for professional services rendered by specialists in diagnosing and treating your daughter. If your daughter had certain tests or treatments in the hospital, you might have received bills from contracted specialists including the ** physicians group (MMEMA), radiologists (RIMA), or other specialists who perform these services and bill separately. This is a familiar practice for many community hospitals that can be confusing, and we apologize if this wasnt explained to you at discharge. We have worked with our ****************** to identify your account and the different providers who played a part in your daughters care, which may have resulted in you receiving multiple invoices. This review was wrong. After the review Maui Health Systems returned my request and explained how there was multiple invoices that were sent weeks apart. They admitted making a mistake but not applying insurance to all the invoices and are correcting that mistake. I would like to withdraw this review.

I am POA and representative for a resident at Kula Hospital Nursing Home who is disabled and unable to speak for himself. Kula Hospital Nursing Home's longterm care unit is overcrowded and short staffed. This has resulted in poor patient care and unfavorable outcomes. Since staying at the facility numerous personal items have disappeared resulting in several lost claim reports. The latest of which is still outstanding. There is no laundry facility at the hospital resulting in wait times for the return of personal clothes in excess of two weeks. There is only one floor nurse per 28 patients in the longterm care units of the nursing home. This results in inadequate patient monitoring and lack of oversight given to the CNAs by the nurse. There is also a shortage of floor managers. The shortage of CNAs on the floor results in neglect of personal hygiene. BM has stayed on the floor of the shower for over a week. Vomit contaminated clothing was not disposed of properly but left to sit in the corner of the room for days. Bandages go unchanged resulting in infections. Bedsores are frequent. The quality of life is inadequate to meet longterm care requirements with patients crowded four to a room with little space for personal property. Many residents do not have windows in their small enclosures with inadequate lighting. Patients spend too much time in bed rather than being engaged in activities on a frequent enough schedule resulting in sensory deprivation and loneliness. Residents are woken up at 5 am to be cleaned. There is a TV on continuously at all hours of the day. There is not an adequate inside visitation area for families. Dehydration has occurred and has resulted in a trip to the ** where 3 liters of fluid was immediately administrated. The most recent uncontrolled Covid-19 outbreak at the facility which began over a month ago and still continues is the result of overcrowding, inadequate facilities, poor hygiene, and lack of trained staff.
