I’m writing to share a deeply troubling experience my sister endured recently at the Emergency Room at Jennie Ed in hopes it sparks a conversation about the state of patient care in our community.

After arriving at the ER due to severe side cramps my relative was left waiting for over five hours before being seen. During this time, there was little to no communication from staff, no updates, and no sense of urgency whatsoever. For an emergency room—a place meant to deliver swift and potentially life-saving care—the delay was not only frustrating but dangerous. Good thing it wasn't her appendix, she would have died.

What made the experience even more upsetting was the rude and dismissive attitude displayed by several members of the hospital staff. In a place where people are often scared, in pain, and seeking help, basic decency and empathy should be a given. Unfortunately, that was not the case here.

I understand that hospitals are under strain, and that staff are often overworked. But long wait times and overwhelmed teams should not come at the cost of compassion or patient safety. If this is what passes for emergency care in our area, we all have reason to be concerned.

Our community deserves better. Patients deserve better. I hope hospital leadership takes a serious look at how their ER operates and makes the changes necessary to treat people with the urgency and dignity they deserve.

She had her gallbladder removed the next day after sitting in their ER sobbing for 5 hours before receiving treatment.
