******* has done our taxes for ***** years. This year we uploaded our tax documents as usual but didn't hear any updates for some time. April 17th ******* emailed and told me that she was having issues, that she filed an extension. I never saw the extension letter but I did tell her I didn't know what we would owe and asked her pro opinion and did not get an answer. But I trusted HER as the professional and waited. She did finally prepare our taxes and sent us her bill (which I paid). I promptly used the payment coupons she issued me and paid both our State and Federal taxes. Sept. 16th I got a letter from the ***** ******************** showing a $175.90 penalty, $20.24 interest due. I immediately contacted ******* via email. Her response on Thursday September 22, 2022 was, "I am sorry for the misunderstanding. An extension is an extension to file not an extension to pay, the extension deadline is October 15th. The deadline to pay is April 15th. This bill is accurate and you may also receive one from the ***** I again reached out the same day, "Thank you for your response *******, We had no idea that waiting for you to process our taxes would cost us hundreds of dollars in fines and interest. I feel that you should have communicated this to us so that we could have made alternative arrangements. I understand from your emails that you had an extraordinary set of circumstances, personally and professionally, however I dont think that should cause your clients financial hardship. You have been preparing our taxes for at least the past 11, if not 12 years. I am hoping that you intend to remedy the situation and look forward to hearing from you soon." Her response on September 26th reads, "It is your responsibility to ensure that you have enough withholding to cover your tax liability. I have no control or input on what you have withheld and had your withholding been correct you would not have penalties. I believe it would be best for you to find.. out of rm
