I hired Hard Knox Carpentry to redo my front entryway. The project was to include cement steps down to the basement, a cedar deck with stairs up to the front door, a small gravel driveway, and a sidewalk from the front entry to the driveway. Work was completed during the summer of 2022, between July and September. However, the deck was built of pine 1 xs instead of cedar 2 xs, and I could tell that it was not well done. The retaining wall they put in was quite bowed out and also not well done. Hard **** had failed to get the required building permit, but I called the inspector at the recommendation of friends and asked him to take a look. He came and gave me a long list of issues with the deck. The inspector also said that the cement steps are not up to code, as the tread is too narrow. There is no drain at the bottom of the stairs, which means water pools down there, right where I bring clean dogs out of *****************. To top it all off, the driveway was put in the wrong spot so I have gravel in my garden area. After getting a quote from another contractor to redo everything correctly, I asked for a full refund because that is what it will cost to remove Hard ***** work and have it done properly. He refunded me for the deck only, but has refused to refund the rest. I will be out thousands of dollars in order to tear out Hard ****** shoddy workmanship so that it can be done correctly. In mid-April I removed the stairs because they had cracked so badly they were no longer safe. It turns out that the cement work was not done properly either, causing it to sink so it is no longer level, and that is part of the reason that the stairs were falling apart so badly. Several of the screws had broken as well. Now I will have to have some of the cement removed in order to have a good quality deck put in, so it will end up costing me more than I originally paid in order to get everything fixed properly.
