I got several bids to shingle my shake roof. The lowest was $16k. Aztec told me they would do it for $15,900, so I hired them. When the job was done they billed me $18,050. They said there were add ons, and listed some on an invoice that looked like it was bought at Staples (no letterhead, company logo, etc.). They also told me they underestimated the size of the roof by 1300 sq feet. I paid them upon completion (I know, dumb move). I have e-mailed, and called them to get line item pricing for the additional work, and the additional materials. It's been over a week, and no one has returned my calls, or e-mails. Their bust on the estimate (they used an app that measures the roof from space to the nearest inch) Should be on them, and not me. If they had bid the roof properly, I would have gone with the guy at $16k. As it is now, I have spent $2,000 of my money making up for their mistake. None of the add ons were discussed with me prior to the work. From their invoice, I can't tell what the changes cost, and what the additional material cost, and I'm not getting any help from Aztec. It does appear that they did a good job on the roof, however, I'm feeling like they came in with a low bid, then jacked it up with changes. I feel like an idiot for paying them when they gave me the invoice, and I should probably have cancelled the check, but I just didn't want to go there. Right now, I would like to know what the additional 12.5 % cost was, and what I think should be on me, and what should be on them.
