I have lived at ************* for two years and have been an upstanding resident. September 2024 I received an email from Stadium District Flats (SDF) regarding my 1-year lease needing to be renewed. *** stated that rent would be increased upon lease renewal, to which I replied not to increase the rent this year due to financial circumstances. Their response via email was to increase the rent and gave me a deadline to accept or decline. I decided to decline their offer, informed them that I would be leaving and would provide a 30-day notice to vacate when I had alternative housing. When my new place gave me the official date of move in, I gave *** my official 30-day notice via email. I explained my current situation and a timeframe of when I would be leaving prior to the lease end date. I received an email saying that was not a good enough date to move out, so I decided to change it to a later date. I calculated the days left in the lease agreement; I would only have to pay two days to *** for prorated rent. I sent them the email with my intent and received no response. Several weeks had gone by and during that timeframe, I had vacated the apartment, moved all my belongings and cleaned the unit. Throughout this time I received very little, if any, contact from ***. A month later, and four days after my original date to vacate, I received a threatening email from *** stating that I would have to owe them the rest of the rent for breaking my lease and for "abandoning the unit". The email stated that I would have to pay the amount shown within 3 days or they would start an eviction and legal process against me. I found this to be completely unprofessional and disappointing. I feared what an eviction suit would do to my background in the future. Feeling compelled by the threat of eviction, I paid the remainder demanded. I would like anyone looking to rent from *** to know that their business practices of using bullying and threatening tactics are unprofessional.
