My 6 year old son was having extreme difficult breathing so I brought him to the nearest hospital to my home. They gave him medicine and put him on oxygen. This hospital could not admit him so he had to be transported to a childrens hospital. The hospital called ATEC Ambulance. He was transported less than 10 miles and I received a $10,100 bill. I received only a couple of invoices and I paid a small amount as that was all I could afford as a single mother trying to make ends meet. I informed A-Tec that I was appealing the claim with my insurance company and I never received another invoices from ****. Now I am being harassed, along with my family members, by a collection company. How can a less than 10 mile ride turn into over $10,000? Why was I not sent invoices? Why does **** not work with insurance companies? How can they bill such exorbitant amounts?

4/16/2024 My 12 year old daughter was transferred from one department of the hospital to the Emergency Room due to no beds available. The ** was approximately 200 yards away. The hospital staff and **** stated if I were to walk her there rather than take an ambulance I would have to sign her out against medical advice. As a health care provider myself I understand that that could implicate neglect for me. ATEC charge $3200 to transport my daughter across the parking lot- as noted in invoice mileage was less than 1 mile. My insurance did reimburse $542.14. **** has reported the remaining bill of $2,713.13 to a collection agency who is now harassing me. I did not want their service and was threatened with potential neglect by signing my daughter (a minor) out against medical advice if I did not use their services. Im now being charged and harassed for a service I would have declined if I had not been threatened. I have concerns that this is an ongoing tactic utilized to scare people- who are already in stressful situations- into paying for services that never would have agreed to.

Around April I started to receive bills from A-Tek Ambulance, **** in the amount of $4583.23 (Run # *****-23). This was for services rendered on December 5, 2023 and came as a complete surprise because I thought my insurance had covered these charges. It had been four months, and the cost was so high, considering that I needed absolutely no medical attention when ambulance personnel simply drove me from one hospital to another for a mental health issue. My insurance company Ambetter had already paid $728.77 to the ambulance company.I contacted ******** countless times in this matter by phone and formal grievance. Ambetters grievance resolution letter states With the No Surprises Act, you are protected from being billed that remaining amount not covered by your insurance. In fact, I remembered at the time of service, that A-Tec Ambulance personnel had told me to cite the No Surprises Act when I received a bill. But my insurance company Ambetter refused to contact A-Tek Ambulance. When I called A-Tek they refused to call Ambetter. So I filed a complaint with the ******************* of ********** In a letter ******** now stated that the No Surprises Act does NOT protect me from ground ambulance billing. This is at odds with the No Surprises Act website which lists ******** as a state that DOES protect from ground ambulance billing. However, in the letter, Ambetters *******************************, Senior Vice President of Compliance cites the Illinois ******************************* Act, which states, By accepting any such payment from the *******************************, the provider of emergency transportation by ambulance agrees not to seek any payment from the enrollee for services provided to the enrollee. In other words, he says A-Tec has no right to bill me since they already received payment from Ambetter. This is particular distressing to me as I was suffering from acute paranoia only to find that A-Tek Ambulance, **** was indeed "out to get me."

    Hello,

Please see the correspondence from commerical insurance company Ambetter:

1ST call to Ambetter Atec spoke to ***** who confirmed this policy is NOT a ******** or ******** policy she said it was a marketplace plan and she confirmed it is a commercial policy.  Atec questioned the low allowed amount and she said they follow contract rates for out of network claims.  Atec confirmed as an out of network provider which allows to balance bill.  Atec questioned why they tell the members they dont have to pay the balance and she said, member services doesnt now how to manage provider services.  She is the first rep that offered the option of filing a reconsideration to ask for a little bit more.

2nd call to Ambetter **** spoke to ***** and after she reviewed the claim Atec asked multiple times if she would 3 way call the member to tell them they had been provided the wrong information from the member side and from Ambetters Senior VP of Compliance *******************************, and she said she cant give out member information Atec told her multiple times Atec has the member information, **** just wants her to call and provide the correct information and she refused and said she cant.  **** asked multiple times then how do we get the correct information to the member since the member side keeps telling him he doesnt have to pay and she couldnt provide a resolution.  Atec asked for a way to contact someone higher up that Atec could either call or send a letter to regarding this issue and she said she would submit an escalation for a provider complaint re: misinformation and someone from Ambetter would contact Atec. She also offered to send the claim back for reprocessing.  Ref#  I-134984700

Atec Ambulance is NOT contracted with the commercial insurance company Ambetter, and is not held to their contracted rate.  Please contact Senior VP of Compliance, *******************************, for providing misinformation for further questions.

    Thank you.

    Complaint: 21795535

I am rejecting this response because it DOES NOT ADDRESS MY COMPLAINT IN ANY WAY.  Ambetter paid $728.77.  A-Tec is billing me the remaining amount of $4583.23.  The last line of the Illinois ******************************* Act (215 ILCS 125), section 4-15 says that an ambulance company agrees NOT TO SEEK PAYMENT after accepting payment from an insurance provider .  I will provide the entire statute below.  This means I owe NOTHING.  In addition, ambulance personnel told me that the No Surprises Act would protect me from any charges not covered by my insurance.  A-Tec's response that they talked to my insurance provider is irrelevant and does not address the statute below, which states that A-Tek is breaking the law by asking me to pay their bill.

    (215 ILCS 125/4-15) (from Ch. 111 1/2, par. 1409.8)
Sec. 4-15. (a) No contract or evidence of coverage for basic health care services delivered, issued for delivery, renewed or amended by a ******************************* shall exclude coverage for emergency transportation by ambulance. For the purposes of this Section, the term "emergency" means a need for immediate medical attention resulting from a life-threatening condition or situation or a need for immediate medical attention as otherwise reasonably determined by a physician, public safety official or other emergency medical personnel.
    (b) Upon reasonable demand by a provider of emergency transportation by ambulance, a ******************************* shall promptly pay to the provider, subject to coverage limitations stated in the contract or evidence of coverage, the charges for emergency transportation by ambulance provided to an enrollee in a health care plan arranged for by the *******************************. By accepting any such payment from the *******************************, the provider of emergency transportation by ambulance agrees not to seek any payment from the enrollee for services provided to the enrollee.

    Complaint: 21795535

I am rejecting this response because A-Tek Ambulance personnel informed me that I would not have to pay this bill because of the No Surprises Act.  I only agreed to accept their services after they told me the No Surprises Act would cover any bill.  If they were mistaken that is A-Tek's problem, because asking me to pay now after their assurances is fraud.  My insurance company Ambetter already paid $728.77 and informed me the Illinois ******************************* Act protects me from further billing.  How I can be charged around $2000 for a ride in which no medical care was needed is beyond me.

    Sincerely,

    *********************

My son was in respiratory failure and needed to be transported to luries children's hospital at ************** in ********. We live in woodstock and Winfield is 42 miles from us. My son was STABILIZED by northwestern emergency **** in woodstock as requested, before transport. I am having trouble understanding how a 42 mile ride, which I couldn't refuse, and transport him myself (because it was medically necessary) would cost 13k dollars. My son was treated with a dose of abueterol, and oxygen during transport. The ambulance drove slow with no lights on the whole time. I understand charging for mileage and cost of employment but what I don't understand is how that all added up to 13k.Atec was an out of network ambulance with my insurance, which wasn't told to me before transport. So I received the bill, and called atec to explain that I am pending an insurance appeal of coverage for medically necessary transport. These appeals take time to gather records and time to get response or approval. As a result, atec sent me to debt collections. I had a debt collector harassing me yesterday and I explained to the collector that I noted to atec, and my account, that I am pending insurance appeal. So now my credit score is going to take a huge hit because atec has no empathy toward my situation. I'm not sure how this is fair at all. They are price gouging and ruining my life when I'm trying to take the proper actions.

A-tec Ambulance Services in ***** ******** is billing me for over $11,000 after my insurance has paid them over $2,000 and I have paid them $200. They are not in my insurance network and were selected by *************************** hospital to transport my daughter, who was mis-diagnosed with appendicitis, to ************************* ********** on 2/2/23. We were told we could not transport her ourselves due to liability. After escalating the claim 3 times and now negotiating the claim for the 3rd time there has been no resolution. A-tec Ambulance wants more money and if I dont keep paying down the $11,000 balance they will send me to collections. This is an absurd amount of money for a middle to lower class family. Im a stay at home mom with two toddlers and my husband is the only one that can work. Price gouging and predatory to people who are barely getting by.

On June 10, 2023, my daughter, *******, fainted while on a 5K bicycle event. The event coordinators contacted A-Tec Ambulance service. I did not choose this company. I later learned the event coordinators had contracted with A-Tec. A-Tec transported my conscious daughter, using no life saving measures, two miles to ******* ******************** I received a bill for $3332.00. I provided A-Tec with my health insurance info *********** Blue Shield of Illinois - BCBS). BCBS paid A-Tec $1512. A-Tec is charging me for the $1820 balance. First, this amount $3332 is price gouging. Similar services provided by municipal ambulance services are billed at $1500 or LESS. Second, the price is unreasonable as evidenced by BCBS only paying $1512 of the bill. Third, I NEVER consented to these fees. The business offered me a settlement of about $800. I am willing to pay them my $400 insurance co-pay, but no more, as they have already overcharged an amount I never consented to. They refused my offer and have now turned the matter over to collections. I asked the collection agency to settle for the $400 co-pay, but they refused as well and stated they will report this debt to the credit reporting agencies.

I agreed but was not expecting a bill for nearly 10 times that amount ($2320.00)A-Tec Ambulance service was called and after waiting 2 hours (maybe more) they finally arrived and they transported me less than 2 miles home and with great difficulty and my instruction were able to get me up to my bed. If I waited another hour, I could have had family come and help me.A-Tec sent a claim to my ***************** (********************) for the amount of ($2320.00) which Ambetterdenied because it was not considered an emergency. A-Tec then sent the bill to **** looked up the claim and found that ******** showed the allowable charges for the claim A-Tec submitted was $257.89. I sent that amount with an explanation from Ambetter of what I should have to pay and what was allowable. A-Tec then began sending me bills with interest tacked on. I sent them a letter saying I was not going to pay the amount they wanted because I felt it was far too much and that they were taking advantage of me in a bad situation. They turned the matter over to a ************************* **** (collection) who began billing me.After some back and forth they said if I sent them $1,490.01 by 12/15/2022 it would be considered paid in full. I sent them $492.11 ( I expected the original bill from A-Tec to be between $250.00 to $750.00). I believe that A-Tec Ambulance service acts in a predatory way and charges exorbitant amounts to people who find themselves in deserate situations. I have found similar reviews about them on BBB so I know they are not exactly a reputable business. I have paid them $750.00.
