My husband and I hired ***** ***** to construct a deck with roof in early April. He assured us that he could get a permit in about 2 weeks since he had "friends in the city". On May 3rd we paid ***** an initial fee of $5000.00 with the intent it would be done within a few weeks. After not hearing from him, the city contacted us on May 22nd stating there was not enough information on the permit request and it was denied. After calling *****, he assured us the deck would absolutely be finished for our family Fourth of July party. On approximately June 15th we called him and again were reassured he would have the project completed for holiday party. What he did not mention was that the permit had been denied for the second time on June 14th. After calling the city ourselves on July 15th we were informed the permit was denied for a third time due to insufficient information. I had to call him every 15"s for an entire day to speak with him on the phone. He was very nonchalant, as usual, no apologies. After telling him in 3.5 months time we had, no plan, no permit and no porch he again said he would complete project. I told him we did not want to wait again for a month long review of permit, risking another denial at the end of the season and would like a refund. Rather than working with us he told me to contact a lawyer. We are currently filing in small claims court.***** ***** was aware of our time line for project from initial meeting in April. At no time in this 3 months did he call us without us initiating call. We are not sure if he ever intended on completing our project as nothing acceptable was ever submitted to city. **** D

We hired DuPage Remodeling to install 12 concrete footers for our deck, but ***** (owner) and his team failed. We provided our project specs to ***** clearly indicating a 15-inch gap required from the top of the concrete footers to the target deck height. ***** hired a subcontractor whose manager was not present for the conversation. ***** informed us that we needed to remove a concrete slab to get the 15-inch gap costing an additional $600. They still failed to provide the 15-inch gap. 8-inch wooden barriers were unnecessarily installed on top of the 42-inch concrete footers, making it 9 inches too high. At no point did they tell us that the 8-inch barriers would be installed, or that we would not be able to build our deck to the 15 inches. We told ***** our concerns. He consistently said everything was fine and "just redraw and resubmit the drawings/plans to the City" This was his sole solution. We had spent weeks preparing the specs and obtaining approval from the City already. We now had 2 choices: redraw the plans at a lower height, causing us to lose 56 sq.ft. of deck or install 3 additional concrete footers at an additional cost of $1,050. The height of the concrete footers by DuPage Remodeling were so high that both options still had our deck sitting over 3 inches above our target overlapping our ground-level windows. The hired crew skipped installing part of the infiltration barrier, leaving 80 sq feet of bare ground uncovered. This could allow grass/plants/weeds to grow through our deck. ***** was no help. Despite our pleas for him to meet with us and discuss the issues, he insisted that the job was finished. After several unsuccessful attempts to address the issues via email, he became hostile and aggressive. Refusing to acknowledge the issues, he demanded payment for an incomplete job that was done incorrectly. He repeatedly threatened legal action, intimidating us by claiming he would "own our house and own us" if we didn't pay the remaining $2,500.
