Late evening January 30, 2025, I locked myself out of my apartment building. I was not able to contact my landlord, so I called a 24/7 locksmith for help. I was required to pay a $150 deposit for someone to come help. When the locksmith, **** *****, arrived, he attempted to open the door, but was unable to do so. He told me he would need to drill it. I was unsure if that was ok since I do not own the building, but he informed me that he would replace it and no one would notice. I asked him how much it would cost, and he told me it would be $589. I reluctantly agreed, because although I know that that is unreasonable, I needed to get inside. He was then able to open the door. He told me that in order to replace the lock, he needed me to go to my apartment to get my key and give it to him. He did not inform me that replacing the lock would cost extra, as I assumed that was part of the cost. I gave him my key, and he proceeded to replace the lock. After he was done, he did not return my key, and he began calculating the cost. He asked for my ID as he was "calculating" the amount, which I reluctantly provided. I was afraid that he was going to not return the key or my ID if I did not pay him the amount that he charged, which was $1,403.00 (for a total of $1,553.00 including the $150 deposit). He instructed me to ***** him the money, and watched me closely as I did so on my phone. He did not return my key or my ID until after it had gone through. He then finally returned my items and left, and provided me with the attached "invoice" via text.I felt threatened and taken advantage of, as I was in a desperate situation. I accept that I am responsible for the $150 and $589 which I agreed to pay, despite $739 already being an egregious amount for the services rendered. However, anything more than that was taken from me under duress. To resolve this matter, I would like a refund of $814.00.
