Took my my **** ****** 4Runner into Mikes after my "check engine" light appeared. It indicated I needed a new vapor box. The cost to replace was reasonable given that they had OEM parts. As they were inspecting the cars overall service needs they recommended several other services and replacement parts for the car. This additional work would cost several times more that the "check engine" light issue. At first, I was taken aback by all of these other issues and the expense I would have to incur. I told ****, the manager, that I felt I may be spending more on the car than it's worth. I mentioned that I was concerned about rust on the undercarriage. He told me that their assessment was accurate and that they would not suggest doing the work if they felt there were any significant issues with the integrity of the frame .When I got the car back all was fine with the driving and "engine light" issue and I could feel the difference the new struts and shocks made to the overall drive. However, I was still concerned about the overall integrity of the frame of the car. So I took a closer inspection around the new shocks and struts and notice considerable rust on the frame. It appeared that this was much more than surface rust. I called **** back and expressed my continued concerns and to check with the technician if he found any reason for my concerns. He called me back and relayerd the the car look and was in the condition you would expect for a car like mine. **** also said that they were not a body shop so they wouldn't be most knowledgeable in this area.I ended up taking my car to another car shop to have them inspect the rust issues. As it turns out there was plenty to be concerned about as there were several ares of the frame that had rotten thru. They did not feel that I was in imminent danger. But that I should not consider any long trips. They also said that the condition of the frame of the car should have been obvious to any mechanic.
