Capitol Federal is selling medical devices when calling their 1-888 number for mobile app technical assistance. I wonder if their app was really offline or if they were forcing customers over 50 to call. Unacceptable!

Subject: Concerns Regarding Unauthorized Credit Check by Capital Federal
Date of Incident: December 27th, 2024?

      Details of the Incident:
I visited Capital Federal with the intention of cashing out several savings bonds. During my visit, I was asked to provide my driver's license and social security number, which I did. However, to my surprise, I later received an adverse action notice regarding an attempt to open a deposit account. This notice cited information obtained from a consumer report.

      Primary Concern:
Unauthorized Credit Check: The primary issue here is the unauthorized access to my consumer report. At no point did I consent to a credit check or the bank accessing my consumer credit information. This action raises significant concerns about the adherence of Capital Federal to federal privacy and consumer protection laws.

      Relevant Laws and Regulations:
Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA): Requires explicit consent from the consumer before a financial institution can access their credit report for purposes such as opening an account.

Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (GLBA): Mandates financial institutions to protect the privacy of consumers' personal financial information and explain their information-sharing practices.

Consumer Financial Protection Act (CFPA): Enforces consumer financial protection laws, including those related to the privacy of consumer financial information.

      Resolution Sought:
I am seeking a clear explanation and justification from Capital Federal regarding this credit check, especially given that I did not authorize such an action. Additionally, I expect assurances that my personal information will be handled in compliance with relevant data protection laws and banking regulations.

      Mr. M*********,
Thank you for the feedback about your experience at Capitol Federal. As was discussed during your visit, we can only cash savings bonds for Capitol Federal customers. In an effort to then fulfil your request to open an account with the proceeds of your savings bonds, a standard ChexSystems report was run, as is customarily done for any new account opening at Capitol Federal. As for the personal information collected during your visit, Capitol Federal takes great care in the protection of personal data and does comply with applicable laws and banking regulations.
      Thank you,
      Capitol Federal

In June of this year, I opened a new account with Capital Federal. I relocated to a new city, and wanted to have a bank where I could keep some of my money, with a nearby branch.
First experience. I needed to sign some financial papers. On my lunch break, I went to the branch on College near the highway and signed them. Then took the papers to the post office and dropped them off. Later that day, I received a call that they missed a paper. The next day, I repeated the same process.
Second experience. I received my debit card, went to the bank and added funds to the account. Asked about the debit card activation, she told me I could take care of it at home. The entire time she is rushing through the interaction. When I get home, I am unable to activate my card. Their process is for the customer to set up a pin at the bank, then they can use that pin to activate their card and change their pin number. She knew this but did not want to assist me.
Final experience. My company sent a small deposit to my account. I reached out 1 week after the deposit as I did not see it. I spoke with Angela #7714. She put me on hold, and the disconnected after several minutes. I called back and got her again. I explained to her that she had me on a silent hold and then disconnected. She told me that when she came back, I wasn't there. This is incorrect and listening to the call will prove this fact. I asked her to transfer me to the supervisor. When he came to the phone, he listened. I explained that I feel discriminated against. Every interaction I have had with this organization, minus 1, has been racially driven on their end.
I will be closing my account. I know that my statements don't matter. But, they can never say that they didn't know that this issue, was an issue. Diversity and Inclusion is something needed for their team. It doesn't matter what your personal feelings towards a specific race, gender, or sexual orientation is, teach your team to do better. ACCOUNTABILITY!
