On 11/22/22 took my 2011 Toyota Camry to get a wheel bearing replaced and to have a check engine light and traction control light checked out. Was told the wheel bearing would be 748.00 dollars I ask why would replacing a bearing be that high and was told they replace the whole the steering assembly because they have no way of pressing a bearing off and on and it would cost me more for them to send it to a shop that could. Well I learned latter on after getting that done by them that was not true called Toyota of louisville to ask them and they said they could replace just the bearing at a lot cheaper price. this is a place sells tires which I have bought thousands of dollars in tires from them with no problem. Thats what they can do. They lack knowledge and experience and equipment to handle any problems other than simple oil changes in my opinion. They did manage to fix my bearing problem which I told them what it was when I went in there but cost me more than taking it to a certified Toyota dealership. My real troubling complaint is I was told on the traction control light it was showing on their hand held junk tester that I needed a steering angle sensor which they charged me 774.00 and 30 to reset. Took their word for it a said fix it. Well I didn’t get half way home till that light was on again went back up their and they said that on Toyota it could be any thing to trigger the light again he wanted to run a smoke test he said I had other codes showing up I ask what was I supposed to do just keep adding parts guessing till we get the right ones That is what he did on the steering angle sensor. I heard enough from him to know they were not capable of finding the problem not only that was told he would have to get the machine to run his smoke test. I told him I was going to Toyota and find out what was wrong with my car and I did guess what did not need the 774.00 steering wheel sensor the problem was a 106.00 part a stop light switch. I have spent thousands of dollars there but I will never be back again this is a warning to others take your car to the brand dealership they have the equipment and factory trained technicians to complete the job without guessing.

Complaint ID: ******** * Business Response

      To whom it may concern,

On 11/21/22 Mr. ****** ***** brought his 2011 Toyota Camry (VIN- 4T1BF3EK5BU663204) with 153,928 miles to our 7000 Southside Drive location with the service request to check a noise in the front (possible wheel bearing noise) and to check the lights in his dashboard (engine and traction control lights). Upon diagnosis we found multiple engine codes and multiple traction control/ABS codes.
      Engine Codes:
P0171 Fuel System Too Lean (Bank 1)
P0441 EVAP System Reference Orifice High Flow
P0455 EVAP System Gross Leak Detected
P0504 Brake Switch A-B Correlation Malfunction
      Traction/ABS Codes:
      C1202 Engine Control System Malfunction
C1231 Steering Angle Sensor Circuit Malfunction
      C1234 Yaw Rate Sensor Malfunction
After running our diagnostic equipment with our Snap-On Verus D10 Scanner on the engine lights and Traction control lights (which we charged no diagnostic fees for .... normal cost: Engine Diag $69.99 and Traction Control/ABS Diag $69.99) and test drove the Toyota Camry. We had to perform further diagnostics. We first checked the wheel bearing noise by lifting the vehicle in the air with a lift and listened to both front wheel bearings with a stethoscope. We then determined that the left front wheel bearing was making a loud noise. We then went through the diagnostic charts of diagnosing the engine codes and traction control codes. We were able to duplicate the issue with *** ******* two traction control codes (C1231 and C1234), resulting in a faulty steering angle sensor, which after replacement (which *** ***** approved), then needed to be programmed/recalibrated and also an alignment performed (which we did not charge for the alignment .... normal cost: $89.95).
We informed ** ***** that we performed the test procedures for the other codes, Traction control code C1202, which is caused by the engine code P0504 (Brake Switch A-B Correlation Malfunction), that we could not duplicate the issue and the sensor was performing properly at this time. We do not replace parts on vehicles without a positive faulty diagnosis. We proceeded to inform ** ***** that this could still be an issue in the future, but it was working properly at this time.
** ***** was informed of the price for the repairs on the wheel bearing and the steering angle sensor, with the communication that there could still potentially be more issues. We also informed ** ***** why we recommend replacing the steering knuckle, versus replacing just the wheel bearing. The cost of the steering knuckle as a part is more expensive than the wheel bearing for sure. We explained to ** ***** that replacing just the wheel bearing calls for more labor time, which costs more money. Also we would have to send the steering knuckle off to have the wheel bearing pressed out of the old steering knuckle and the new wheel bearing pressed back into the old steering knuckle. Along with this way of replacing the wheel bearing, we always run into other issues from the machine shop, where they press wheel bearings daily for lots of automotive shops in the area, where the wheel hub is damaged from the faulty wheel bearing, which is another part that has to be purchased. By replacing the steering knuckle, it saves on time and very little difference in money. He was aware of this repair before he gave us the approval to replace the steering knuckle.
*** ***** approved the repairs knowing that we were not performing the "engine smoke test", which would diagnose the engine codes P0441 &  P0455 and that at this time we were not doing anything about the P0504 code because we could not duplicate the issue.
** ***** approved the cost and repairs.
We replaced the left front steering knuckle for the faulty wheel bearing, replaced the steering angle sensor, performed the steering angle reset/calibration, performed a wheel alignment, and reset all engine and traction control codes/lights. After test driving ** *****'s Toyota Camry everything was working perfectly, no more noise and no lights on in the dash. We informed *** ***** his vehicle was ready.
When ** ***** picked up his vehicle on 11/22/22, he called us on his way home and notified us his light came back on in the dash. ** ***** drove the vehicle back immediately and we used our diagnostic equipment to run the codes. The only code that returned was the P0504 Brake Switch A-B Correlation Malfunction. We reminded ** ***** that it could be an intermittent issue. The wiring tested good and the sensor tested good at the time of diagnosis. We offered to retest the sensor and asked if he would like a price on the sensor if that was the culprit of the code P0504. He informed our manager Cody Rice that he was going to take the vehicle to the dealer to have it diagnosed.

8/15/22 Brought vehicle in due to engine cutting off while driving. Service center did the vehicle inspection and said they needed to replace/remove the camshaft sensor, clean the throttle body, and do an oil change with the filter replaced. Total price including labor was 452.08. After picking the car up, two days later it started cutting off again. Once back in town, we took the car back to the shop on 9/1/22. Now they say it’s for sure the timing chain which will be roughly 1800.00, that the cam shaft repair was a temporary fix to try to get around having to replace the timing chain. This should have been told to me before paying the 452.08. Who pays over 400 bucks for a temporary fix? It’s makes no sense to pay money to still have the exact same problem.

Complaint ID: ******** - Business Response

      To whom it may concern,

Mr ***** **** dropped off their 2014 Chevrolet Equinox (VIN- ****************** on 8/15/22 for a "Check Engine Light Scan - Customer States the O2 Sensor is bad". We check the Engine Codes and found there were no O2 Sensor codes, only Camshaft Position Sensor codes. After test driving Mr. ***** vehicle several time, our technicians could not duplicate the issue. My manager at the Southside Drive location, **** ****, then proceeded to call and explain that the issues are not occurring at this time. We did find the engine codes for the Camshaft Position sensors. If these sensor were acting up, this could cause the stalling issue. At this time, because we could not duplicate the issue, it was only a suggestion with the possibility of the timing chain being an option. Mrs. ***** then told us to proceed with the Camshaft Position Sensor replacement, knowing there was no promises that this would correct the issue. If you had to start somewhere correcting the vehicle stalling issue we should start with the sensors first with the thought that it is either the sensors or the timing chain has become out of alignment and will also cause the vehicle to stall at time and cause the same engine codes as the sensor issue.  Any engine diagnostic research will tell you that with that code, you have to start in order with the sensors and then if still unresolved, the timing chain.

We did the first step repair.  The customer then advised us that the issue was not resolved.  The store manager asked them to bring it in, let us scan the codes to confirm it is in fact the same codes and see if we can get it to mess up on us.  When we scanned it, we found that it was still pulling the same codes.  We advised the customer that the particular store they were at does not support that level of service work and we would have to send it to our 3rd Street location.  We did not quote that job at that time.

We have a follow up method with all of our customers.  The customer responded to the follow up voicing their concerns.  Our manager then responded reminding the customer of their previous conversation explaining that fixing the sensors may not fix the problem but we had to start there.  I have attached that correspondence.

If you need any other information I am more than happy to help!

Thank you so much with your help in resolving this,
