We need an area of 4.5' X 7'5" of ceramic tile replaced. Joshua ***** came by to create an estimate and we went over what we wanted. We also had several other 18" tiles that needed replacing/repair to be included in his quote. He called and submitted an estimate for both materials and labor, $2250. The contract specified the new tile would be brought to the existing level of the existing floor. I paid $1150 for materials with the balance due on completion. He was to arrive at 9am Monday, October 21. He didn't show up until 1pm, put down the concrete board and applied mortar and left. He was to return Tuesday at 9am, and got there at about 10. At 11 am, my wife called, saying she was very concerned because the mosaic tile he recommended didn't appear to approaching the level of the existing tiles. At lunch, I inspected the work and pointed out the issues. I reminded him of the contract terms, and I then asked him directly if he was able to meet them.. He promised it would be fine. Wednesday, he didn't arrive until after 2pm. I asked to see the replacement tiles and he said they weren't on his truck just then. Thursday, he didn't arrive until nearly 2pm. We again looked at the floor together and he assured me it would be good. He showed me one piece of the tile, and although the pattern matched, he had purchased a gloss product while ours is a satin finish, and couldn't be used. Friday, he patched 4 tiles with an epoxy, and pronounced the job done. The tile level was uneven on three sides and ragged looking. I said as much and he said the job was "done to industry standards" and became upset. There was no discount although the other tiles had not been replaced. I wrote him a check for the balance, and he said I could keep it because he was going to file a lien against us! His helper pointedly told him I was offering payment in full and he should take it and leave. I told Mr. ***** to take the check and leave the premises.
