    I contracted to have tile in my shower fixed and regrouted. I was given an estimate of $1300.00 for the job. I agreed to the price and work was started on August 9. When he started he found there was some wood damage and this had to be replaced. We agreed and understood the cost would be higher. He sent me an invoice to pay for materials and I paid him $836.00 for the needed materials. He came back on August 10 and completed the project but never told us what the charge would be, just that it would be more. When he completed he left a mess in our bathroom, left grout all over the tiles and the glass, did not set the tiles evenly. The work was shoddy and looked like an amateur had done it. I will have to find someone else to redo this mess. He used a different color tile and made the grout lines approximately 1/2 wide whereas the other grout lines in the shower are around 1/8 inch. Then, to add insult to injury, he sent me a bill for $2893.07 in addition to the $836.00 I had already paid, making the grand total $3729.07. I did some research on my own and priced the products he used through the Lowe’s website and I found he could purchase all of the materials needed for the project for $116.98. He worked 16 hours total and if we paid him $50/hr which I feel is reasonable, the total would be $1000.00 for labor. The “trip fee”, card fee, and tax would be $442.80 for a grand total of $1559.78. My husband and I would have paid $2000.00 for the work, but we feel that we were way overcharged and price gouged on this repair. Even more so because we will still have to find someone to redo the mess he made on the grout. I can provide pictures if needed.
