On 4/24/23 Charles Clifford sent his apprentice to shut off and unhook water under my sink to prepare for a new countertop. He called just as the apprentice arrived and told me to make out a check for $1,250, and when he comes back to hook the water back up, I should make out another check for $1,250. I questioned the price and he said to me in the exact words I have to make money somehow. His apprentice cut drain pipe too far back which created a problem for the real plumber as he had to cut around the wood under the sink to make the pipe fit. I am an elderly, single woman (almost 80) and I believe he took advantage of me. I called him and asked him to return $1,000 of the money. He screamed at me on the phone and wouldnt let me talk. I had another plumber here recently because of a tub leak and he told me it was illegal to send an apprentice on a job alone??? I spoke to numerous plumbers and every one of them told me his price was outrageous!! I live on Social Security and I want to get my $1,000. I believe that $250 that he can keep is sufficient for the work the apprentice did.

    Business Response

    Date: 07/06/2023

Customer was given a verbal quote for the work. Half of the money up front, half when completed. The owner hired a different person to finish the second half, and never paid the business any of the second part. The business owner thinks she hired him to do the first part quickly because she couldn't find anyone else to do it, then bailed out on the agreement.

Charles Clifford is a LIAR.  He never gave me a quote for the job until the day he sent his apprentice.  I also never signed anything.  He called my house as the apprentice came in the door.  I felt intimidated talking to him on the phone.  I stupidly made out the check for $1,250 for 30 minutes work.  When I tried to talk to him on the phone he screamed at me so loud that I couldnt get a word in.  Tile World of ******** recommended him when I purchased my tile selection for my countertop.  I made the mistake of not asking upfront how much the job would be.  Everyone I spoke to said it would only be a few hundred dollars, not $2500.  Tile World has since let him go.  I never signed anything as he stated, and, he said something about even buying me a garbage disposal.  I never said I needed one.  I really think he has me confused with another customer.  I have pictures to prove that the apprentice didnt even remove my garbage disposal.  My son had to leave work from (from ****************** to *******) to remove my garbage disposal because the the installers couldnt put the countertop in unless it was removed.

It is so upsetting to think that he can get away with scamming a single, elderly (80 on July 4) woman.  Im not dropping this until I get $1000 returned to me.

PLEASE check with other plumbers to ask how much they charge to shut the water off under the sink and remove the faucet to prepare for a new countertop.

When I called plumbers from internet they said averaged charges would be around $275.00, maybe a limber is they ran into a problem.  He charged $2500.  No I didnt have him back because I got a Master *******, who is a friend, to hook everything back up for free (not $1,250).  He was appalled when I told him what Charles Clifford charged.
