My son is a recovering alcoholic and was looking for a sober house to move into to help with his recovery. He contacted Vanderburg Communities who have a sober house in ***********, **. He asked to see the house but they told him it was being renovated and not available to tour. They did give him a move-in date and told him to have a $360 bank check as a deposit. The description and photos of the facility on-line led him to believe it was a comfortable, well kept location. It was not. There was no supervision or oversight and only one other resident lived there. He had no choice but to stay there the first night since there was no other housing he could go to, then promptly moved his belongings out the next morning. Without any oversight or support, he did not feel that this organization was offering him anything other than a place to stay, which had no air conditioning and very very few amenities. He contacted them the next day and explained why he could not stay since he felt that without support, he would be at risk of a relapse. I paid for his deposit and tried to contact the main location via their website email on a number of occasions but received no response (ever time I called it went to voice mail). Since I paid for the down payment, I am seeking to get it back(less the cost for the night he stayed). Since there was one other person living there in a very large house, its not a situation where they would say they had to deny someone else a room and thats why they are keeping the deposit. I just felt that they were not honest with regards to the facility, the program and the support that vulnerable individuals like my son need during their recovery. I believe a return of my deposit is fair.
