A family friend of mine, hired Freedom Fighters (****** Hatch) to help him with the parole process. Mr. Hatch stated his services included getting the parole packet together and to the board. He also stated he assisted in contacting the parole board for updates. He was paid $4,000.00. He was sent a few documents, and no deliverable were given to the family or the inmate. Mr. Hatch has ****** $4,000.00 from a family that pulled all resources to get that amount of money to Mr. Hatch.
His phone numbers blocks contacts, his address is in a strip mall, the website does not work. His mother is the secretary, and she does not answer emails, or phone calls either.

I hired Freedom Fighters (Joshua *****) to help my nephew with is porale hearing. I paid them $3500 to help with his parole. They did his portfolio. The agreement was that Freedom Fighters would be available for him until he was released. I have recently tried to contact them to ask a question my nephew needed answers. I have sent them several email and I tried getting on the company website to contact them and the website is not valid. They have not held up thier end of the contract.

I am an attorney representing a Maryland inmate housed in a Maryland prison. The inmate hired the Freedom Fighters, a non-profit to retrieve a judge's court bench file and if that was not possible to represent him in a court of law to obtain said file. The representatives traveled to the Court house, but was unable to acquire the file though they did retrieve documents already in possession by the inmate. After this was done, it was relayed to the inmate that they would file the proper letter to the custodian of judicial records, but that the inmate had to represent himself (pro se) in court to litigate the case. The letter was written and sent directly to me for review. The letter was poorly written, failed to state the required Maryland Code section, and was addressed to the court itself instead of the custodian of judicial records. The inmate, through me, paid their fee of $2,500 to retrieve the file and represent him in court. Unfortunately, they misrepresented their ability to provide legal representation and told him that he would have to litigate the case pro se. The inmate, immediately discharged them and hired a private attorney to follow through. The inmate desires to have his money reimbursed to him given the fact that they misrepresented having an attorney to litigate his case.

    Business Response /* (1000, 5, 2022/12/19) */
Freedom Fighters responds to the complaint lodged against it by noting there are several misstatements of facts, and that not only is the complainant due no refund; the complainant owes reimbursement to Freedom Fighters for expenses advanced for certification , copying and mailing fees that the inmate in question directed Freedom Fighters to make. Freedom Fighters was retained after waiving it's initial customary prison visits fee of $500 per Freedom Fighter representative. The inmate initially wanted a review if voluminous material and was informed the fee for the review and research, to include consultation visits would be $10,000. The inmate scaled down the request to retain our services to travel to Wicomico County to visit the Sheriff's office to retrieve disclosable material, the Court Clerk to retrieve documents to be certified by the Clerk, and, additionally, to request review and copy of the judicial file, and mailed the retrieved documents to his counsel. Additionally, Freedom Fighters to review his second post conviction material and related portions of the record. Further, if the judicial file review was denied, Freedom Fighters agreed to research and devise a strategy to obtain this material, and make a request for release if the Judicial file deemed work product by the Maryland Rules, and to draft a request letter for the inmate to request this material pro se. As a courtesy to the inmate, Freedom Fighters agreed to reach out to a few organizations interested in Freedom of Information issues. It was the attorney representing the inmate who told Freedom Fighters not to include citation of authority in the initial drafts of request letters. Freedom Fighters always acted under the supervision and direction of the Complainant attorney, and never told the inmate we had an attorney who would represent him. Complainant thanked Freedom Fighters for it's efforts and told us not to proceed further. The inmate is owed nothing Freedom Fighters, and was informed he had exhausted his retainer fee based on visitation and the hours spent researching and devising a strategy to achieve his aims. The inmate owes an outstanding balance for money advanced by Freedom Fighters as described in an invoice emailed to Complainant Counsel.

    Consumer Response /* (3000, 7, 2022/12/22) */
(The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)
I am aware that there was no signed contract between the parties. The inmate claims this and I never received a copy of any contract from the inmate or the Freedom Fighters. Nevertheless, there was an oral contract. I did receive receipts from the FF for the Clerk of the Court, USPS, and Fed Ex totaling $75.06 of which I sent my check for that amount made out to ****** ****** on December 5th and mailed it out to the FF in Annapolis for Mr. ****** to pick up as per their request. The FF must verify their receipt of my check. As of yet that check is not recorded on my bank account as being cashed. (refer to download) As far as the letter to Request the judge's file is concerned, I recall that I did tell Mr. ****** not to insert case law at this point, but to include the required Maryland Code Section. It was relayed to me by either Mr. ****** or Mr. ***** that they would assign an attorney if there was possible litigation to obtain the file. Unfortunately, this was not so, therefore the inmate decided to not proceed any further with FF as he never wanted to proceed pro se. Some members of the FF hold themselves out as paralegals which they have shown no proof though we never asked for such, but relied upon their statements. The inmate, himself does possess a paralegal certificate. FF also hold themselves out as a professional organization to assist their clients in criminal legal matters, but there is no evidence that they have any significant legal knowledge, skills, or abilities or education or training to do so. They state that they assist their clients by working with their attorneys, but they seem not to have attorneys on staff. At this point we no longer wish to pursue our claim and kindly ask BBB to close out this case.

    Consumer Response /* (2000, 15, 2023/01/23) */
SF- Consumer requests to close case.
