On November 11, 2021, Roberto Construction received the final payment for the renovation of my kitchen. Part of the contract (no. 75) included sanding, priming and painting all the kitchen cabinets. Some paint started peeling and he returned to correct it. Then more cabinets started peeling and he will no longer answer my telephone calls. In addition, he was supposed to return with 1/4 round molding for the bottoms of the cabinets. The cabinets are slowly starting to peel in other locations. There is embedded dust under the paint. I believe I will continue to have problems with the cabinets and the surface cannot be corrected without redoing the entire job.

I would like the entire amount that I paid for the cabinets, $3,200, returned to me.

      to me

Hello this is Roberto, owner of Roberto Construction. I'm willing to refund $1,000 even though the problems she's having it's because she didn't let me use the right products and she also wanted to me do the work the way she saw people do it on YouTube. I tried to explain that I knew the right products to paint the cabinets and she still wanted me to use regular semi gloss paint. Also the molding she mentioned that was something extra she wanted after the job was done but we never agreed on a contract to get the work done. Also I fixed the floor that we agreed on the contract to do for $2,000 from money that was refunded from the company that installed the floor but when I fixed the problem on the floor she told me that it was too easy and I had to give her a $600 discount because she didn't want to pay that we agreed on the contract because from her perspective it was too easy.

(The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)
It is true that I shared with Roberto what **************** informed me about what kind of paint should be used. However, I left the final decision to him. He bought the products. In addition, I never told him what primer to use and yet it either peels off with the paint (which I didn't think primer would do that) or it wasn't completely or correctly applied. Roberto did not supervise the painting. It was done by 2 helpers in his absence. I shared with him my concern about the dust on the cabinets while the helpers were working on the painting. That issue was ignored. You can visibly see the dust under the paint. Perhaps that is contributing to the problem. I don't understand why he never spoke of his allegations when he returned the first time to correct the peeling paint.

It is true that the molding was not included in the contract, but he verbally agreed to bring it to my house and install it after I painted it. If he had no intention of doing this task, then he should not have told me he was going to do it. And then not return my calls.

I do not agree to $1,000. That will no way allow me to have the cabinets corrected.

      Business Response /* (4000, 10, 2022/09/28) */
I do not agree to reimburse more money because the product I used was not the products I use in all my other jobs and she never let me suggest anything because she trusted more on her research. Every time we agreed on something the next day she would changed her mind. I spent a lot of time going back and forth trying to make decisions with her and at the end I had to use the products she researched and do the job the way she wanted too because she didn't trust my advice or opinion.

am quite confused about Mr. Lopez's response. The painting of my kitchen cabinets was the last of several wood painting jobs that he did for me. The first one was the master bathroom vanity drawers. This job was sanded, primed and painted by his son Oscar. He used the Sherwin William paint and it turned out beautifully. It is very smooth to the touch and no signs of peeling. Then all of my bedroom furniture was sanded, primed and painted with the same results as the bathroom. Some of the drawers stuck a little and still do, but there is no peeling.

Mr. Lopez stated I never let him suggest anything. He never said anything to me about getting bad results with the Sherwin Williams paint. As stated above, he used this paint with all the other jobs at my house and there were no problems. He also stated that every time we agreed on something the next day I would change my mind. I believe he is referring to the living room and bathroom colors. There was a lot of back and forth because the colors would look different than the samples. However, this had absolutely nothing to do with the Kitchen cabinets. I chose between 2 different colors in the kitchen and had my decision made before the work was started.

The problems with the kitchen cabinets are due to the fact that the cabinets were sanded in my garage (due to weather) and were not properly cleaned of ALL sand and debris. I brought this up to both Oscar (who was the one on the job and doing the work along with a trainee). I also mentioned this to Mr. Lopez that I had concerns about the dust.

"One of the most common causes of peeling, bubbling, or cracking paint is that the surface was not properly prepared by cleaning, sanding and removing grease and dust before painting".

"Vacuum up any debris before you even think of dipping that brush in paint. Just a few pieces of dust can ruin the look: "You'll get a gritty finish and it'll look like you painted over sand," says Fahrbach. "To fix it, you'll have to sand it and repaint it all over again."

The above 2 quotes are just a sample of the many sites that talk about the importance of painting on a clean surface.

While I appreciate his offer for a $1,000, this unfortunately would not even begin to cover the expense of the redoing the cabinets. The fact that he offered this money, tells me he knows there is a problem. But I totally disagree that I am at fault.

I see that Ms.Doreen is saying that we didn't properly prep all the cabinets by sanding them and cleaning them but she knows that we spend almost two weeks sanding and cleaning the cabinets before we applied the primer and paint because all this work was done in her garage. And she was fine when we were done with the cabinets but for the same reason that she didn't let me use the right product to get a better finish on the cabinets, I'm pretty sure that was the problem. And the the fact that I'm willing to give her a $1,000 back is not because I think there's a problem, it's because I rather lose that money and not go back to fix something I know wasn't my fault . The last week we were working there she started having problems with people who could only speak Spanish and I didn't feel good having my workers being mistreated. Everyday she wanted me to tell her and explain what my helper was doing. Every time she saw that I would send my helper to do something or grab something to hand to me she was there questioning why he's doing.
