I visited this Gym in October of 2022. I paid a fee to take a class as a trial. While talking to the instructor Kyle, we discussed the steps to join the Gym. I had concerns about joining because some gyms use pretty hostile tactics to keep your membership active. I directly asked him if I could cancel at any time. The instructor Kyle said "Yes of course, we're not like that.".

A week later I was in an accident and broke 3 ribs. I was not able to physically continue with the training. I let them know and they directed me to a website to fill out a cancelation form. Three months later, I got an email from them saying "We're going to charge your card unless you tell us otherwise". They then charged my credit card without my knowledge for $280. I only went to this gym one time 4 months ago from the date of this complaint. I haven't used their services and I called and filled out paperwork to cancel 4 months ago.

What I have learned from their customer service since is there is no way to cancel it without a doctors note. Otherwise they will only "freeze" your account for some time and then continue billing you. This was not explained to me at all when I signed up (and who would sign up if they knew those terms?).

When I spoke to their customer service, I was bullied and yelled at by a gentlemen named Thomas.

*****, it is unfortunate that this is your experience. We take customer care extremely seriously especially considering the nature of our service. It's regrettable that you labeled us as a "scam" just because you didn't get your way. However, Krav Maga Marylands' Membership Agreement clearly states that if you are physically unable to train due to medical reasons, you can pause or cancel your membership, and you fit that category. More specifically, here is a direct quote from the Cancellation portion of all contracts that members sign. It states one of the reasons to cancel is "in the event that the MEMBER should become physically unable to make use of any of the services offered by SELLER." It goes on to later state, "All tuition must be up to date in order for a Member to terminate their membership. Agreements cannot be canceled if there is an outstanding balance."

Upon looking further into this, you sent our member services team an email on December 25th at 6:57 pm asking us to keep your account frozen. I copied and pasted your email below; it read:
      "Hello,
I do not want to unfreeze my account. Im not fully recovered from my injury.
Ill let you know when Im ready to start back up.

      Thanks,
      *****"

This is standard protocol for most places when you want to discontinue service. After further investigating your account and speaking with our member services team, we found that you were issued multiple courtesy refunds over the past few months. Even when you failed to provide the necessary documentation, we did this to make it easier for you. We asked numerous times to have something on record on our end, and you still did not reply with proper documentation. So at this point, Krav Maga Maryland has refunded your membership multiple times since it started back in October. Therefore you only paid for the time you used the membership, so I am unsure how you can suggest a company was a scam when we went above and beyond to accommodate your situation.

This reply is less for you and more for anyone looking to potentially train here at Krav Maga Maryland. There has always been a universal stigma that it is difficult to cancel a gym membership. So we have made sure to go out of our way to make it as easy as possible while ensuring there is proper documentation for all parties. If you have any questions about how our membership options work, please don't hesitate to contact us.
