My father was discharged from the hospital and sent to home hospice on a Tuesday morning. He had drains in his abdomen and a open wound down the middle of his stomach from surgery. We had an admissions nurse go over phone numbers to call and said we would get supplies and meds delivered next day and our hospice nurse would come by the next day also. We had to go to a pharmacy for meds that day but they should deliver. That night my dad was in pain and we noticed one of the drains was clogged. Night shift nurses showed us how to flush one drain. Still more pain - they upped his meds, but no meds and no supplies delivered, not even a urinal. Hospice Nurse showed up in the afternoon and told us she would show us how to manage drains the next day and she would have meds in an hour. Nope. Had to hustle out to a pharmacy 25 min away and prescription sent from HOC 5 min before they closed. Nothing delivered. No urinal, no shower chair, no mouth swabs, nothing. We had to help my father get out of bed to go to the bathroom when he was in a lot of pain and highly medicated. On Wednesday night he fell and hit his head as I tried to help him get to the bathroom because we had no urinal. We called hospice. No one came out to check him and no one had a urinal to give us. They just said “we are working on getting the meds to you tomorrow.” They kept upping the pain meds every day. Pain meds didn’t arrive until Friday. Thursday evening nurse finally brought a urinal. She didn’t walk us through drain flushing or dressing changes. One RN was supposed to come out on Thursday but our hospice nurse gave her the wrong phone number and she had other things come up. I learned later, the drains should’ve been flushed daily, the dressing should’ve been cleaned and replaced daily to prevent infection and other issues. He was in pain and we will never know if the drains or open wound were infected or clogged. They just upped the meds. My father was unresponsive on Friday and he passed Sunday.
