I was gifted a two night gift certificate for Christmas last year from my father to use next time I came home to visit. The gift certificate expired 1 year after purchase.I was unable to travel to ******** this year due to the fact that I am a firefighter for the ********************* and this past year was hectic. In researching MI law it appears gift certificates of this type are required to be good for 5 years.I called and emailed the business for 3-4 days in a row and finally received a text message back from them stated they would extend the gift certificate one month, which seems in breach of the law.

This was a gift certificate, not a gift card and therefore does not fall under the 5 year rule.  Furthermore, it was purchased by the father of the recipient not the person complaining!  I both spoke with and emailed him and offered to extend his expired gift certificate one month, which I had no obligation to do.  He was quite rude and quoted this 5 year rule which I looked up to make sure I had no done anything wrong.  I don't feel that he is entitled to anything and had a full year plus one month to use the certificate and failed to do so.

    Sincerely,
