May of 22 I signed up with huron law group for debt consolidation. I put several accounts in with them. I was informed that if anything happened I would have an attorney to handle it. I was also told that because the accounts are in consolidation they wouldn't report delinquent. Since I signed up the accounts have been reporting delinquent. In October I was notified that I was being taken to court for one of the accounts that ********************** had. They informed me that they hadn't even talked to *** company. I sent in the subpoena several time was told they would take care of it. I was then told to ask for a continuation so huron could get their attorneys straight. The judge granted the continuation until march. Huron informed me that I had to pay for them to do the letters when I pushed I was told they had it covered since I was a huron law client. I called in February and April Huron told me not to worry they were working on it. I was then told 4 days before court to get a continuation again as they couldn't do not send attorney's to court. I went to court on my own and the judge granted the law suit in favor of **** who stated they had no contact from huron. When I called I was told huron never sends out attorneys and they will work on it. I have updated my finances with them several times showing their payments are overloaded. They extended my payment plan without notice to me and now telling me I have to pay more. They didn't do that they have said they would.

I enrolled in a debt settlement program with Huron Lawn Group. The representative informed me that if I were to ever cancel the program, I would be refunded the amount I already paid into the "escrow." So far, I've paid $1735.68, yet none of my accounts have been settled. My credit score dipped from the 600's to 400. I have creditors calling me daily offering great settlements, yet Huron Law Group haven't done much on my behalf. Yet the money in my "escrow" account has been used to pay themselves. They are as follows: $510 for the ************* $765 to themselves for supposedly settling my accounts. There are other miscellaneous fees for which was never explained to me. I've canceled my enrollment and asked for a refund, and they refused to give me any of that money back. They have ruined my credit, I'm seriously delinquent to my creditors and am worse off today than I was when I enrolled. I'm learning that I could easily settle these accounts on my own. This program is a scam and they should be ashamed for telling people misinformation and false hope of financial freedom. At this point I might have to file for bankruptcy because of Huron Law Group

Huron Law Group appreciates the opportunity to research and respond to our former client's concerns, we apologize for any frustration this process has caused. A Huron Law Group team member was able to reach Ms. ******* to discuss her concerns in further depth, as the negotiated arrangements secured on her behalf were disrupted as a result of inconsistent savings deposits. As a result of their account closure, a refund request is currently being reviewed and we will inform our former client of the decision once it has been made. Our *************** team remains available to address any additional questions or concerns, and wish our former client the very best as they continue to work towards financial freedom,

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID ********, and have determined that this proposed action would not resolve my complaint.  For your reference, details of why I am rejecting this response appear below:

[You must provide details of why you are not satisfied with this resolution. Please type details here:]
I was initially told by the representative who signed me up for this program that if at any point I wanted to cancel the program, I would be reimbursed for all fees paid into the program. The company, Huron Law Grouo, have denied my request completely. My credit score has gone from 600's to 400's. My accounts are seriously delinquent as Huron Law Group have not taken any action to resolve my accounts. They also told me recently I would receive a refund for the legal club fees, but have now told me I will not receive that money back. This company is a scam and make promises they don't keep just to get you to pay them to do absolutely nothing. I will now have to file bankruptcy due to the lack of attention to my debts from Huron law group. They misrepresnt themselves from the very start and lie just to get you to join their program, which doesn't work.

In August 2024, I reached out to ************ in hopes of support for debt consolidation. They then transferred me to Huron law group immediately. When I spoke to Huron law group for intake call they collected information on all of the debt and asked me to confirm payment dates. At this time, they advised me to make a payment the 30th or every month in the amount of $323.80. After 90 days of no communication, no details and no payments made to my creditors, I grew more and more concerned that this was a scam. I contacted them several times in that 90 days for an update, and they kept advising that I was still in phase I. After further concerns of now my bills being over 90days past due, I contacted them to cancel my account and I was told that I would receive a full refund of $971.40. On Dec. 26, 2024 I was refunded $493.22. I called them on Dec. 27, 2024 to inquire when I would receive the remaining $478.18. At this time the representative advised that it should have received the full amount and that he would research and get back to me with an update. One Jan 3, 2025, I called for an update and the representative stated that there was numerous fees for the group and that they would not be refunding me the rest. Ironically, the fees total the amount that they kept. I advised the representative that I was not aware of any fees that would be charged especially, she they had not disbursed any payments on my behalf. I have been in contact with the creditors myself, and they all advised that they had not been contacted by this agency. This operation comes across as predatory for people who are already trying to do their best to reduce debt. How is it legal for an organization to take money and just hold it without paying debts that they promised and then keep your money. Nothing in the documentation, states that I would not receive a full refund. I am requesting the full amount to allow me to pay towards the debt that I in good faith, I trusted them to do.

Huron Law Group values the opportunity to review and address our former client's complaint. We sincerely apologize for any frustration caused by the program and cancellation process. It is typical for clients to begin seeing negotiated results around the sixth month of enrollment due to the creditor aging process and the accumulation of savings, as outlined in both the client enrollment agreement and the compliance call conducted prior to the program's commencement. The amount not refunded at the time of cancellation was allocated to third-party fees. However, Huron has arranged an additional refund of $405.00 for legal club fees, which should be reflected in the claimant's account within five business days. We wish our former client all the best in their continued pursuit of financial freedom.

Started a enrollment process. They took 3 withdrawals from my account over 2 months and had not proceeded with anything so I told them to send my money back and cancel it. As a result they are charging an enrollment fee of nearly three hundred dollars for doing nothing. Contracts have to be reasonable and provide benefit to both parties. An enrollment fee of three hundred dollars is not reasonable. I want my money back.

In *************************************************************************** minimum payments. Huron advertised that they could settle my debt in 3 months for less than I owed for a lower minimum payment. I have been paying $604/month since to them to settle roughly $30,000 in credit card debt. So by my math, I have paid them about $23,500 over the last three years. They just extended my plan to August of 2026 so I will pay another $14,500. So now I'm paying them $38,000 to settle $30,000 worth of debt. This is a SCAM. I paid them to lower the debt so that I can pay them more. Not only that, they absolutely RUINED my credit during this process. I went from a 702 to a 580 credit score during this process. The only reason I considered this business is because they had the BBB rating. This is absolutely unacceptable that consumers are being scammed like this. This is the worst decision I've ever made in my life and it is definitely affecting my family financially.

Huron Law Group appreciates the opportunity to research and respond to this complaint, and apologize for any frustration experienced. Huron Law Group only assesses fees once a settlement has been reached and the initial payment of the arrangement is funded to the creditor. These fees are described in detail within the client enrollment agreement, and do not change as the client navigates the program. At the time of cancellation, two settlements have been negotiated and fulfilled in accordance with the agreement with each creditor, and all fees associated with those accounts were deemed as earned and non-refundable. An offer was obtained for their remaining debt, however they elected to terminate the program prior to funding the account at a 50% reduction. Huron fulfilled their obligation to negotiate each of the client's enrolled debt, and performed all services outlined within the enrollment agreement. Our *************** team is available to answer any additional questions related to this matter, and wish the client the very best in resolving their remaining account and reaching financial freedom.

Signed up for debt consolidation to this business that claims they'd settle every account, QUICKLY. A year in and they've settled two accounts while the rest are being charged off, destroying my credit. I reached out to them with this concern, got no response. I did get a "pre-qualified loan offer" in a few days, which was denied, because my credit is destroyed. So where do we go from here? Still no response from these idiots.

    Business Response

Huron Law Group appreciates the opportunity to research this complaint, and apologize for any frustration our client has experienced. Huron's debt resolution program differs greatly from debt consolidation; Huron is not a lender, and sets clients up on a structured savings deposit schedule for the purpose of negotiations on each enrolled debt as funds accumulate. While we are not able to guarantee loan eligibility, we are able to move forward with the original 39 month program in which the client enrolled. As each account is settled in full, that status will be updated to each of the three credit reporting bureaus by the originating creditor and over time their score and financial health will improve as a result of eliminating each debt. At this time, three of the client's nine accounts have been negotiated and of those, two arrangements have been fulfilled. If any questions persist, we encourage our client to contact our *************** Team at any time. In the meantime, we look forward to your continued program success!

Huron Law Group is a debt settlement company. I originally signed on to a program proposed by **** financial. I was told they would stop the 8 creditors pursuing me and they would begin negotiations to try and settle the debts . There was NEVER ANY EXPLANATION about the fees that were methodically taken from my account. They represented that if they settled a debt then they would take 25% of the settlement as a fee. It turned out Huron Law Group was the actual company now handling the account which was never explained to me. **** had explained that the account I paid into was an escrow account and I had COMPLETE CONTROL OF IT and I could withdraw the money any time. $6500 was paid inHuron Law took $$5000 in fabricated and unauthorized feesand only $1500 was paid to creditors before I had to declare bankruptcy because of my 41 yr. Old sons death on 4/4/2024. I requested the balance of my account back at that time and it was incredibly. $0. I have no documentation of any of the settlements or fees after requesting the info several times. Investigation needed on this business and its underhanded dealing. Account should have no less than $3300 in it. The hidden contract says their fee is 25% of the original debt instead of 25 % of the actual settlement with the creditor. This is not what was represented by **** financial when I signed on to the program. This is a contract of adhesion and consumers should understand what they say and do are two different things.

Banks will not negotiate with Huron Law Group until after an account is delinquent, and Huron Law Group cannot negotiate without funds available in their dedicated savings account to accommodate resolution.
After review, we were able to obtain a refund of most of the client's third party fees, which was processed back to the client to resolve this matter.

I hired Huron in 2017/2018 to consolidate my debts, negotiate settlements, and help me start fresh. I just learned that three accounts, all through ********** are showing as delinquent, and still active. Huron did not fulfill their end of the bargain. They also encouraged me to cash out my 401(k) to make (1) payment of fees owed Huron, and make payments to creditors. Bottom line, I wound up wit significant tax implications.

    Business Response

    Date: 09/23/2024

The accounts in question are reflected as delinquent on the clients credit report as a result of being place in term settlements which have not yet been fulfilled. For settlement agreements, creditors and collectors only update a consumers credit report ***** days following the final settlement payment is made. Any client who has interest in accelerating their program is encouraged to add funds as they are able; and while no client will ever be forced to do so, they may be provided with examples of how other clients have infused their savings in the past.
All tax implications were outlined in the disclosures in both the client enrollment agreement and the enrollment compliance call at the beginning of the program.
