I was in a wreck and the Columbia mo police department had them tow my car. The police refused to tell me where my truck was so I can retrieve my property and after two weeks I get a certified mail in saying I owe $1,700 and counting every day the truck sits at their yard. With no one telling me where the truck was I was not able to get a hold of anyone without knowing where it was. *** never heard of a towyard refusing to give personal property back to an owner that is inside a vehicle. They are only wanting cash and they would release the truck. I called them and told them the situation and they were not cooperative at all.

    Business Response

    Date: 02/10/2024

The customer was in an accident on 1/18/24. The ************************** authorized us to tow this vehicle, the customer knew we towed it as he was still on scene when the tow truck driver arrived. There was a gun in the vehicle and the officer listed it on the tow sheet and said the customer would come pick it up the next day. We never heard anything from the customer so after 2 weeks of not hearing from anyone we sent certified letters to the owner and lienholder. (legally we have 30 days to notify the owner but we try to get it out as soon as possible but also want to give them the chance to contact us first because when we send certified letters it incurs another fee as we have to pay for this service)

After sending letters we first heard from the lienholder central bank who said they will repo the truck if the owner doesn't get this handled asap. A day or two go by and finally we hear from the owner who doesn't want the totaled out vehicle or to pay any portion of the tow bill he only wants his belongings out of the vehicle. Legally we only have to release prescription medication and eyeglasses. We do not release personal property from vehicles because it is our collateral to see that we get paid for the service we provided at the request of the police ***** We towed the vehicle from an accident scene and stored it, we should be paid for our services provided. All impounds are cash only BECAUSE we have been burned so much in the past where people use a credit card and then protest the charge saying they didn't make that purchase and then we are out that money so to avoid this impounds are cash only- if the repo agent or insurance  picks up we take company check.

The customer did not have insurance so his vehicle was not covered in the accident and he told me on the phone he was going to let the bank repo the vehicle. If the bank repos the vehicle they get the truck and all the belongings to auction off to pay the remaining balance of the lien. If they choose to give his belongings back at that time that is up to them but I have never heard of that happening as they are trying to recoup their money from the predicament their client has left them in!!

If after ************************************************************************************************************************************************************ order to get paid for the service we provided.

I want to note that during this week of police call wrecker rotation we towed over 30 vehicles at CPD request and every single one of them was able to find/cleanout/pickup their vehicle...EXCEPT this client...

The customer knew where his vehicle was, and even if "the police wouldn't tell him"  (yea right) all he had to do was pick up the phone and make some calls there are not many tow companies in this town...

If the client wants his belongings out all we are asking is that he pay for the services we provided.
