I had them installed a tile floor. The grout is coming out and tiles are loose. They installed Ditra over existing hardwood flooring. Per ******** website, ***** is not recommended or warranted over existing hardwood flooring.

    Business Response

    Date: 02/11/2025

***** Busenbark received call from Mr. ******* regarding the grout coming out and loose tile, and he mentioned that the Ditra underlayment was the issue, being installed over hardwood.

Loose grout and tile are typically caused by movement in the subfloor. We contacted ******** representatives about this and were informed that while installing Ditra underlayment over hardwood flooring is not warrantied or recommended, it does work and won't cause grout to come out. They advised further investigation in to the home's substrate.

Upon inspecting Mr. *************** substrate, we found that his home was not built to current building standards and that there was excessive deflection in the floor substrate. Please see the notes below for more information. Busenbark doesn't  check for subfloor deflection unless specifically requested, as we assume that houses are built to modern standards.

This calculator for deflection was shared with Mr. ******* and information below.  Mr. ******* will need  more support if he wants tile replacement to work.   We have given him a cost quote on 04/13/24 to do the replacement after the substrate was built strong enough to support new tile and grout.

04/19/24 - 08:33:19 :  Called and explained his floor joist does not meet the deflection calculated,  the ******** *** said that people install ceramic all the time over solid wood, and they don't warranty it but it does work.

Thank you for using the **** ****** Forums *************** :-)

For joists that are SYP or ******* Fir, in good condition, 8 inches tall, 1.5 inches wide, 16 inches on center, and 13.5 feet long between supports, the deflection calculated is ***** inches.

    This translates to a deflection of L / 287.

Since the maximum deflection for tile is L / 360, and for natural stone is L / 720, your floor is rated for Sheet Vinyl or wood.

Please note that this tool is only for simple floor joist arrangements, and only calculates the deflection along the *length* of the joists. Many factors such as extra beams, wood condition, etc. can be very important. If you have any questions, stop by the Forums and ask. Given extra information, the Engineering staff will be happy to run the numbers for you and make recommendations, free of charge! If your floor is marginal, it may be a simple matter to beef it up enough to get the job done.

NOTE: You also have to verify whether or not your subfloor is strong enough to provide the necessary structure *between* the joists. Please check in at the Forums and ask if you don't know what type of subfloor is required for ceramic tile or natural stone.

We have taken every precaution to make a useful and accurate deflection calculator that is offered free of charge. You are strongly encouraged to post the results on this page to the **** ****** Advice Forum for review by the engineering department. No one can be held responsible for outcomes resulting from numbers posted here. There are no guarantees.

This calculator has been used ****** times since 1/18/2003

I ordered tile installation for 1/2 bath and laundry room and they wanted to come measure the square footage which I did. After agreeing to they changed and increased the square footage therefore increasing the bill without telling me. I took pictures of the tile I wanted and after I told the sales person what I wanted, she increased the price saying they "forgot" to change the price tag on the tile. I lost all trust in this company after that. They continue to say I owe them but I do not owe them.
