    Beyond The Backyard (BTB) is not honoring our contract and is engaging in deceptive business practices. *** performed no work, nor performed any services during this entire process other than sending us a contract and taking our deposit. ************** (***) worked with us while we attempted to work with the county to comply with code regulations. Unfortunately, our permit was not able to be approved due to the countys foundation requirements. *** admitted that we cannot buy directly from ***, yet *** says that buying directly from *** is the only way to have our deposit refunded if there is a permit issue. Buying directly from *** is what we thought we were doing when we were redirected to *** to complete the transaction. The contract we signed states clearly that *** will refund our money if there is a permitting issue, directly after the line item that says deposits are not refundable. The contract is worded in a manner that leads the customer to believe that deposits are not refundable unless there is a permitting issue. When **** engineering department determined that the project could not move forward, *** said they would refund our deposit; but that they could not perform the refund because *** was the party who took our deposit. They then directed us to *** and told us that they should refund our deposit because this was due to a permitting issue. *** refused to refund our deposit and said the contract stated there are no refunds. We pointed out the very next line that says that *** will refund our deposit in the event of a permitting issue that is out of ASCs or the customers control. They told us this was only when buying directly from ***. We told them that we contacted *** and were redirected to *** to complete the transaction. ***** at *** told us that yes this is what they are supposed to do because *** services our area. I pointed out that this means we are not able to buy directly from *** then if that is how buying direct is defined.

    ***** from Beyond The Backyard just called my wife's phone. He told me he would refund the rest of my money, after he received a call from the BBB and an email from **************, if I took down all of the reviews and information that was posted online warning others about how they treated us. He then threatened me with legal action if we did not comply with his request. I have the entire call recorded including his threats and extortion attempt. It can be heard here:  ******************************************************************************************;

    The full document of the issue with this update added is viewable here (We have also attached an updated copy of the document including this update):
    **************************************************************************************************************************************************

    Please help us in any way you can. The harrassment and threats are adding insult to the injury we have already suffered due to ***'s unethical business practices and the treatment we have already had to endure from *****. Thank you for your efforts! We sincerely appreciate you!

    After ***** from Beyond The Backyard called us and tried to extort us in order to make us take down our posts warning other people of their deceptive business pratcies, he then trheatedned us with legal action. Atfer this, we contacted the BBB, MO AGs office, our ******************** RipOff Report, and ************** to notify them about Jasons attempt at extorting us, followed by his threats that followed when his extortion attempt failed. We are currently seeking counsel regarding the criminality of Jasons extortion attempts and threats.

    On our call with teh manufacturer, ************** made it very clear that Jasons behavior was unacceptable and that Beyond The Backyard should have refunded our deposit. ************** is seeking ways to handle this situation since ***** is not complying with their requests. It is possible that Beyond The Backyard will no longer be a dealer for American Steel in the near future. Our entire call with American Steel can be heard here:

    Thank you for your time and assistance!

    **** ******, a supervisor with American Steel, reached out to us on Wednesday April 30th. **** agreed with us that what ***** and Beyond The Backyard did was wrong. To make things right, **** overnighted us a check for $1500; which was almost $200 more than what we were owed by Beyond The Backyard. ************** also offered us 24% off any building we like in the future. I thanked him for his offer; but told him that we had an open dispute with our credit card company and would rather get our money back in that way so Beyond The Backyard was forced to face their own consequences. **** understood our position; but insisted on this solution because he did not want the impact to *************** business to continue. ************** has been so helpful to us that I did not want to drag this out and impact them any longer. Because of this, I agreed to accept the $1500 refund and to close our credit card dispute and to update the BBB complaint. **** asked that we let everyone know that **** ****** at American Steel made this right. All we asked was that ***** at Beyond The Backyard call us and apologize for taking our money, attempting to extort us with the money he took, and for his threats over him taking legal action when his extortion attempt failed. **** agreed this was the least ***** could do given the circumstances. It is now nearly a full week later and we still havent heard word one from that cowardly snake ***** over at Beyond The Backyard. I am a man of my word. So, we are updating the BBB case and we have withdrawn our credit card dispute. However, *****, if you are reading this, I hope that was the most expensive $1,300 you ever took from someone and I hope you learned your ******* Dont keep peoples money just because you had some dubious contractual line that you think gives you the justification to do so. If the manufacturer would refund my money after working with us for 2 weeks, then you have no right to keep that deposit when we didnt consume even an hour of your time on the phone in total. We have since found a possible solution to our pier requirements from the county. If you would have given us our deposit back initially, we would have turned right around and given it back to you once we discovered this alternative foundation solution that we just heard about. If you would have been man enough to call and apologize, I was going to tell you about it too so you could use it to help other customers in our position (its called a handy pier). Shame on you for your selfish and disrespectful behavior! If someone has a permitting issue, give them their money back. They will come back to you once they get their problem solved. Thats just smart business.

    Business Response

    ***** ******* signed a contract on February 14, 2025, that clearly states:

    We are happy to upload the signed paperwork at any time, which clearly outlines the non-refundable policy Mr. ******* agreed to. This includes his signature and initials acknowledging those terms. We have nothing to hide and will provide documentation if needed to protect our companys integrity.

    Down payments on an ASC structure are paid directly to the dealer upon entering into the purchase order and are non-refundable.

    He was sent the contract, reviewed it, initialed every section, and knowingly agreed to those terms. We also provided multiple quotes on different structures to help him make the best decision.

    Despite the contract being crystal clear and the fact that the permit issue was entirely on the customers side we still refunded 50% of his deposit on March 7, ************************* good faith. No deception took place on our part. In fact, we went above and beyond what the contract required.

    This complaint is not only inaccurate, its dishonest. We fulfilled our role. He did not meet county requirements. We have the signed documents, the refund receipts, and all communications to support that.

    We take pride in our reputation and how we treat people but we will not accept being slandered after doing our part and more.
