On the evening of April 10, 2025, I visited the Peppermint Hippo in *********, ** with friends. While there, I ordered several shots at the bar and clearly told the bartender, I dont care, something cheap. Along with a few other patrons, we had a total of five shots. When I went to close my tab, I was presented with a bill totaling $538, which was completely unexpected and disproportionate to what was ordered.I was not provided with a menu, nor was I informed of the cost of the drinks beforehand. I did not request premium liquor or specialty drinks. Given my level of intoxication at the time, I was hesitant to dispute the charge in person out of fear the situation could escalate or involve security. To avoid confrontation, I paid the bill and left. The following day, I contacted the manager to report the issue. He said he would look into it. When he followed up, I was told that since the alcohol had been consumed, nothing could be done. While I understand typical refund policies, this felt like predatory pricing. I made a good-faith request for something inexpensive and was taken advantage of due to the environment and my intoxication. This establishment creates an atmosphere where pressure and distraction are common including dancers persistently soliciting money from patrons and this seems to be part of a larger pattern of targeting vulnerable customers. Ive spoken to others whove experienced similar issues at this location.Desired Resolution:I am requesting a full or partial refund of (598 after tip) charge and that the Peppermint Hippo implement clear, transparent pricing practices, including verbally disclosing drink costs before serving and making menus readily available. I also ask that they train staff to avoid exploitative behavior, especially with visibly intoxicated patrons. This kind of conduct erodes trust and puts customers at risk of financial harm. I hope the BBB can help facilitate a fair and ethical resolution.

    Business Response

We appreciate the opportunity to respond to this complaint. While we regret that the guest was dissatisfied with their experience, we must respectfully disagree with the characterization of events and allegations of misconduct.
At Peppermint Hippo, we uphold clear and consistent policies regarding alcohol service and pricing. While we do not use a printed menu, guests are welcome to request any brand of alcohol they prefer. In situations where a customer defers to the bartenders recommendationas was the case hereour standard practice is to confirm both the selection and the price per drink before finalizing the order. There is no evidence that this protocol was not followed during the evening in question.
Our records indicate that the guest voluntarily ordered multiple shots, not only for themselves but for a group of patrons. At the end of the visit, the itemized receipt clearly displayed all charges. At that point, the customer had the opportunity to ask questions, dispute any line items, or seek managerial assistance. They chose to complete the transaction by signing and submitting the full payment, including a tip. While we recognize that environments such as ours are lively, we do not pressure patrons into making purchases.
Regarding the claim of intoxication, our staff is trained to monitor guests for signs of impairment. Had this customer appeared clearly intoxicated, our team would have ceased service and notified security or management. We have no internal reports or concerns logged that night indicating overservice or inappropriate conduct.
The manager addressed the callers concerns professionally and documented the complaint. However, as is consistent with general service industry practices, once alcohol has been consumed, refunds are not issued. This policy was explained to the guest. While they may disagree with the outcome, that alone does not constitute wrongdoing on our part.
Finally, while the customer references anecdotal experiences of others, we have no record of prior BBB complaints. Most concerns, when they arise, are resolved promptly and professionally on-site. We remain committed to operating ethically and ensuring all patrons are treated fairly and with respect.
Thank you for allowing us to present our perspective on this matter.
