We received a notice from the Revenue Div of Kansas City, MO, indicating overdue earnings tax from 2021. I contacted Midwest Bookkeeping for assistance & to request a copy of our full return as they prepared our taxes. On 3/15/25, we reached out via email to request a copy of our tax return. We sent emails, called, & left voicemails but no response was received for several weeks. Melissa Downs of Midwest Bookkeeping finally responded on 03/24/25, stating: "I have received your numerous emails & phone calls. Due to tax season, I’m currently prioritizing my existing clients & handling a high volume of work. I appreciate your understanding that your request will take longer than usual, & I may not be able to address it promptly. I am confident your current tax provider could also review the notice and provide feedback." This response was both unprofessional & dismissive, failing to address the gravity of the situation. Understanding that tax season is busy, we acknowledged their workload & merely requested a copy of our tax return to resolve the issue independently. On 3/28/25, we sent a formal request, reminding them of 26 U.S. Code § 6107(a). They are legally required to provide us with a copy of our tax return upon request within a reasonable time frame. We set a deadline of 4/1/25, for the return of the documents. We received no response. The lack of communication has resulted in us incurring substantial penalty & interest charges. As a qualified tax preparer, they are responsible for ensuring the accuracy & addressing any issues. The failure to provide us with the requested return & acknowledge their mistake is not only unprofessional but also financially damaging. Given their negligence in handling our case, we believe they should be held accountable for the resulting fines, penalties, & interest. Their refusal to take responsibility for their error & their continued failure to provide us with the necessary documents has left us in an untenable position.
