After 6 years of renting/purchasing violins from Top Notch we decided to upgrade our daughter's violin to an expensive model. We were told that the new expensive model was a level 5 violin and paid $4200 minus the trade-in for the old violin we had previously bought from them. We did not know how violins are graded and trusted Top Notch when purchasing since we were long-term customers. We later found out that ********************** have labels that verify the brand and make them traceable to a distributor or producer. After having the new violin for 2 years, we decided to upgrade again to a higher-quality violin. Top Notch did not have anything we wanted, so we looked elsewhere. When we found something we liked, we looked to sell or trade in the violin we had. Top Notch refused to buy back the $4200 model, even at 75% of the purchase price, unless we bought the new violin from them. When I told the owner that an appraiser said the wood on the $4200 model looked like inferior Chinese wood, the owner claimed it was European wood. We called the distributor of the brand to verify which wood it was, but the distributor could not trace the violin, as the label had been changed. Another employee admitted that the label had been changed by Top Notch and it was their "house" label. On further inquiry, the distributor of the $4200 violin does not have any equivalent violins for sale at the price we paid. The closest comparable model is $2000 less. We have no way of proving the authenticity or value of the violin as it is untraceable. An appraiser feels it sells new for around $2100. I would like the original label so that I can show potential buyers the true value. Alternatively, I would like Top Notch to buy it for 75% of the purchase price. If the company changes labels to make verifying the value impossible, it is an unethical business practice designed to sell items for a far higher value than it is worth, denying owners the possibility of verifying the true value of the purchase.
