I walked in ace with 2 new key fobs for my vehicle I asked how much it was to have them programmed they advised me it was $50 I said I had 2 and I repeated the question" $50 for 2"? They said yes so they programmed them and sent them to the front counter where the guy then says to the cashier $50x2 I said you told me $50 for both he says no it's $50 each I said ok well I can't afford that so never mind he says to late it's $100 I said nevermind I don't want you to program them you either told me wrong or I heard you either way I don't have $100 dollars , he said well then I'm keeping your key fob , I said no they are mine I walked in with then you can force me to use your service and pay any price you say or keep my key fob and he said yes we can cause i have labor in it now , soni said then deprogram them and ill.take my key fobs back and he said no you owe me $100 so i called the cop and of course they are no help , this seems like it should be illegal , otherwise all they have to do is change the price at the register and lie and then your forces to pay whatever they choose or you don't get your key fobs back which I just bought brand new

    Business Response

    Date: 10/28/2024

Mr. ****** came into the store asking to be directed to the person who cuts automotive keys.  The store manager informed Mr. ****** that he was the one who cuts automotive keys.  ********* then asked what the price was for cutting and programming two keys he had brought in.  The manager told him it was 50 dollars each.  Mr. ****** asked for a moment and wandered down an aisle before returning and said that he would like to have his two keys cut and programmed. The store manager led him to the Helpful Hub where the cutting and programming takes place. This whole exchange happened in front of myself (the business owner) as well as another senior member of our team.
While at the Helpful Hub, Mr. ****** asked again about the price, and he was again told it was 50 dollars each.
When Mr. ****** arrived at the register to check out, he acted shocked that the price was 50 dollars each, claiming he had been told they were 50 dollars for both.  As I had been privy to the conversation, I knew for a fact he had been told it was 50 dollars apiece, and I told him as much.  Mr. ****** continued to argue with him about the price, until I told him I was done arguing and he could have them for 50 a piece or leave them.  Mr. ****** claimed that we could not hold on to his keys that he had brought with him and demanded them back.  I informed ********* that he had agreed to the price of the cutting and programming, and now that we had labor in the keys we could not just relinquish them for free.  (This principle is the same as when we repair a chainsaw if the owner of the chainsaw refuses to pay for the labor put into his chainsaw we hold the chainsaw until he does.  It is also the same principle of a contractor placing a lien on a property he is working on.) Eventually Mr. ****** left without the keys, threatening to return.
Over the next several weeks, we received many calls from Mr. ******* often multiple times per day.  He began by trying to negotiate the price of the keys, and when that didnt work he turned to anger.  We had to end the calls with Mr. ****** several times due to hostility.  We eventually had to involve the local police to advise Mr. ****** to cease the harassment and ban him from the store.
Mr. ****** sent his son to collect the keys.  I advised his son that the keys would be 50 dollars each.  After a short argument, Mr. ******* son left the store to call the police.  The police attempted to explain the legality of the situation to Mr. ******* son.
As of the time of writing this, a representative of Mr. ****** has paid for and received the key fobs in question.
