On 5/8/2023 ********************* gave me an estimate to renovate my home for $69,000.00 During the process he asked for another $20,000, which i gave him. After that, he worked maybe 1 week and left the job and only gave me back $3,300.00 He left numerous things unfinished that he agreed to do, and left poor quality work (bad trim, bad grout in tiles, etc.). He failed to build my steps, failed to lay the tile back splash, failed to finish sheetrock around the hot water heater, did not install my sink nor toilet i had provided, did not finish sanding / staining floors, did not make crawl space doors for under the house. *** basically stole money from me. I don't have 1 room finished. Tried to get him to at least finish my floors and I would call it even (eventhough i am still at a HUGE loss).

    Business Response

**************** asked me to come and look at a 200 year old house he wanted renovated. He explained to me that he would need an estimate to give the bank to justify the loan for $70,000. It didn't take a lot of time to get to that amount and we discussed that there would definitely be unforeseen situations that would need to be addressed. It was understood from the beginning that this job would have to be time plus materials, as there is no way to know for sure what we would encounter. The job began in August, **************** paid time plus materials bi-weekly and came to the house daily to inspect progress. There were no complaints about the quality of the job as we moved along. **************** and I discussed that we would have to prioritize projects because the money was shrinking and was not going to cover everything he wanted done. We did that for a little while but we weren't able to see eye to eye. I refunded the portion of the money that was left so he could find someone else to the things that were most important to him.

I am rejecting this response because:
I gave **** $20,000 (per his request and his estimated amount ) to finish the project. Theb, he said he was $10,000 in the red, which i said okay. He and I looked over the detailed item list to finish , and he agreed if we left off painting it would work. Then, **** works a week or so then bails, leaving me a check for $3,300.  So, by his on estimate to finished. Where is my $6,700? He didnt finish one thing on that list, and the tile job he did is awful. He admitted he messed it up but wont fix it? Sorry, but not sorry. I paid **** $74,000 and I dont have one room livable.  Off the original quote I got no front nor back steps, floors in new side of house not finished, no tile back splash, left off redoing my shower to help him $ wise, no Sheetrock around electrical panel. The way I view it is either he agrees to finish some things (as an honest person would do) or I will now continue with the lawsuit in which ***** ****** Law Firm says it will be no problem (bases on the 2 estimates and the work done on the house they inspected) to get the money either right away or from Liens on his property. His choice.
    Sincerely

I responded to this last week, but I guess I didn't get everything in the 30 minutes allotted. I apologize, I am not taking this issue lightly. I am very disappointed that **************** and I could not find a suitable solution for this problem. From the very beginning, we both understood that this job was going to have to be cost plus materials because the house was 200 years old and we both understood there were going to be unforeseeable additions. I invoiced **************** monthly and spoke with him daily about the progress being made. I heard no complaints from him until the cost was going to be more than he wanted to pay. When I saw that we were not going to be able to work it out, I immediately returned the money he hadn't spent yet. This was a learning experience for both of us and I wish we could have worked it out. I take pride in the work i do, so it does bother me to have an unsatisfied customer.

I am rejecting this response because:

    Dear ****,

What happened when I gave you the $20,000 more dollars to finish?

You then said you were $10,000 in the Red and then you gave me an estimate to finish at $18,500.  *** said we would leave off the painting and it should work.  What happened?  then I only get back $3300?  I went by WHAT YOU SAID!! so by your own itemized list to finish, i am short money.HOw did i only get back $3300?  you were in the red 10, i gave you 20.  you said then you needed ***** to finish.  *** said you would leave off the painting for 7900 and it should work then BAM.  You leave and only leave me $3300.  Man that is criminal and you know it.  How would you leave tile that is a horribly done job and think its okay to not come fix it?  Come on man.  I need you to at least give me 5000 back more.  you owe me that.  you left me in terrible shape and not one room finished.

    Sincerely,

    ***************,

I have attached the final bill that the $10,000 went to. I have always included receipts for any purchases made on your behalf. This invoice clearly lays out where every ***** went to. Every invoice I've ever sent you included receipts so that we could be clear on how/where money was being applied. I'm truly hate that you are so dissatisfied. I was honest with you always. I have every receipt and invoices to account for every last *****. Good luck and I hope everything works out for you.

    ****************,

In the last letter I sent you, I forgot to mention that you were right when you said you were $10,000 in the red. That's why I was referring to the $10,000 you had left.

    Thank You

    Complaint: 21550399

I am rejecting this response because:

    Dear ****************,

So I had $10,000 to help finish.  You gave me then (after I gave the the $20,000 extra) that you needed $18,500 to finish.  You agreed to put $10,000 towards it and we would leave off the painting and you said you would be able to finish. Then, you tiled my floor and said you messed up the grout-didnt fix it.  We even discussed if tile would work in an old house and you said yes, then after the fact said it wont work and never fixed the bad workmanship. So off that list u said to finish, what got done? And I only get back $3300???? This is my problem. I used your numbers and then you dont go by the numbers you gave me to finish. I am supposed to be okay with that?  You had time laid out to do the back splash and didnt do it. No sets of steps. No finishing the stain on floors in addition part of house.
Another problem I have is when you asked me for the extra $20,000 you said , your words (not mine)- I can see the finish line now and $20,000 will get it all done. Then, I give you $20,000. Then-after I do all the bank rework on the loan- you come back and say you were in the red $10 and you need $18,500 to finish. Then, by YOUR itemized list to finish, you agreed that by leaving off painting it would all work. Then, you put down bad tile and dont fix it, and what else. And only leave me $3,300 ????? Where is the $6,700 difference. Take of that for doing the shower. You mean I still get nothing back? This is the shady part. And make no bones about it, I will continue to pursue this with the lawyer if I dont get at least $5000 (which I really deserve more). Ball is in your court. You created all of this. And if I dont I will make sure o continue to post all to ******** and good luck getting work around here.

    Sincerely,
