We received a certified letter stating Sliters Lumber in ******, MT started the process of filing a lien against our property after delivering lumber for a construction project. I never heard of this company so I called them and she said their process is that after they make a delivery, they start this process to insure that their interest in the property is filed for their protection. I asked when the money was due for the lumber, she said June 10th, I'm writing this review on June 3rd. We haven't even been given a bill yet and received a certified letter on June 1st for a debt that isn't even due for 10 days! This company thinks they can put a lien on our property before they've even been wronged. Shame on them! Beware of this company and their business practices.

We apologize that our notification that we supplied materials to the project on your property was interpreted as starting the process of filing a lien against your property.  On two occasions, members of our team tried unsuccessfully to explain the notification you received over the phone.  We were not able to dissuade your frustration.  For that, we are very sorry.

We did not begin the process of filing a lien against your property as stated above in your review.

Your review indicates that you had never heard of our company. As a materials supplier, we know that many property owners do not know who has supplied materials or services to their projects.  We notify property owners of our involvement for many reasons.  The letter explains that you can take action to protect yourself from a lien being filed against your property. The advantage of this notification is that property owners and their contractor (and subcontractors) can have a clear and straightforward dialog to ensure material and service providers to your project have been properly paid.  This can avoid costly litigation later, unexpected liens or other costly and time-consuming challenges.

Montana law is very specific and we follow the law carefully.  The law includes provisions that *** seem excessively formal.  The law specifies the mode of delivery (certified mail or in person) and a very short time after delivery of materials (only 20 days) for us to notify property owners of our involvement in their project. In some cases, like yours, the 20-day timeline to notify you is shorter than the due date for payment of materials.  The notification date is based on state law; the due date for the materials is based on the terms of our credit agreement with our customer.  These timelines often do not coincide very well.

We certainly regret this has caused you to feel our business practices are not appropriate.  Our legacy is one of working hard to treat all parties fairly, honestly and transparently.  In the long run, we believe our business practices create value to both our customers as well as the property owners for whom our customers work.

Please accept our sincere apologies that we were unable to satisfy you of the reasoning behind our business practices.
