UNCG initially awarded a UNCG blue and gold merit scholarship to my daughter. With this scholarship and other scholarships, loans, and grants my daughter will over pay for her first semester at UNCG and was expecting a refund for ~$253 based on the bill we viewed yesterday. Not even 24 hours later, the UNCG blue and gold merit scholarship was removed from her account and now she owes ~$788 dollars to UNCG for each semester. These bills are due in less than a week or classes are allegedly cancelled. My daughter called the school and their explanation was that "funding has changed" for this scholarship. How is it possible for UNCG to award a scholarship and then due to some error on their end remove it claiming funding has changed? The scholarship should not have been awarded in the first place if UNCG did their due diligence. I think UNCG needs to provide a discount to all current and new students that were initially awarded the blue and gold merit scholarship only to have it taken away a day later. Based on my rough calculations, the discount UNCG should provide the blue and gold merit scholarship awardees should be around ~$1,041.00 per semester or ~$******** per year.My daughter made her first monthly payment today to UNCG so that her classes will not get cancelled. I'm still trying to wrap my head around how it's possible a university can award a scholarship and then less than 24 hours later rescind that scholarship saying funding changed. The scholarship should of never been awarded in the first place...period. Since UNCG messed up by initially awarding the unfunded scholarship means that UNCG should provide ~******** dollars per year discount to all UNCG blue and gold merit scholarship awardees.

      Business Response

      Date: 09/18/2024

      Good morning,

This BBB complaint was forwarded to me yesterday (9/17/2024). I logged in to respond, but the case is already closed. Unfortunately, it took a month to be routed through the university to get to the person who could answer the question. I am hoping you can help me to resolve this. Here is a summary.

This parent submitted a comment on the UNCG website with the same complaint on 8/9/2024. The comment was sent to me immediately. I sent an email to the father at 2:07pm on 8/9/2024 requesting his daughters name and ID number so I could research the situation. When he did not respond within a couple hours, I had to have someone query the system to identify the student based on the fathers email address.

I sent an email to the student at 5:03pm on 8/9/2024. We did not change the amount of the award in any way but changed the source of the funding. That change occurred on 8/6/2024 and an email was sent to her about the change on 8/12/2024. While her financial aid awards on the financial aid pages of her self-service displayed correctly, a system issue caused the bill on self-service to include an over-inflated amount of aid between 8/6/2024 and 8/13/2024. We apologized for the confusion and offered to have further discussion with her and her father. I also advised her on a way to save some addition money on her overall bill.

The student responded to me on 8/12/2024 at 5:23pm indicating that she appreciated me reaching out and explaining the situation to her. She indicated that the complaint was mostly tied to lack of communication about the change and how the system made her remaining balance due artificially lower than it should have been. She repeatedly thanked me for my time and gave me no indication that any additional follow up was needed.

As you can see, I took the complaint very seriously as soon as it was submitted and sought to engage the parent and student immediately. We have since done significant investigation into the cause of the system error so we could prevent it from happening again. Additionally, we will be instituting a policy that requires preemptive email communications in advance to changes to sources of funding to warn students ahead of the change for now on.

Please let me know how I can resolve this case satisfactorily. I truly appreciate your assistance!

      Best wishes,

      ****
