Dear BBB,Im filing a complaint against Charlotte Eye Ear Nose and Throat Associates (CEENTA), regarding an ongoing billing error for account #************** October 2020, my son was injured at school. We obtained a legal settlement, and our health insurer placed a lien to recover medical expenses, including payments made to ******. After the settlement, the insurer notified ****** that the lien had been satisfied. This was an informational letterno refund was issued or requested.****** has misunderstood the letter, now claiming they refunded the insurer and are billing me personally for services already paid in full. Despite multiple attempts to explain and provide documentation, CEENTA refuses to correct their records or stop billing **** have proof of:Settlement and lien satisfaction All payments made Communications with ****** I am requesting that CEENTA:Cease billing/collection efforts Correct their records to show a $0 balance Retract any credit reporting tied to this error This is causing unnecessary stress over an issue that was resolved years ago. I have had several transactions with this provider. I received a bill for the 1-8-2025 service of $44.34. I paid the bill. However, my healthcare insurance also paid the bill. I requested a refund, however, the provider kept saying that they would reimburse me after all claims had been paid, since I had gone to them on several occasions. After all claims were paid, they stated that on 2/21/2025 service, they made a mistake and needed to correct the mistake and send it to my insurance company again. There was never a new claim for the 2/21/2025 service sent to the insurance company. Now, all of my claims have been paid with all Explanation of benefits with Patient responsibility $0 as noted on the uploaded document. I would like my refund of $44.34 asap. For Information only, I also paid this provider for services that I decided not to get. Instead of reimbursing me one lump sum the same way I paid them, they gave me my refund in four different installments and didnt even use the same method that I paid them with. I am rejecting this response because: first of all this has nothing to do with HIPPA it is about a reimbursement for a payment for the services on 1-8-2025. Currently all services have been paid by the *****************. There is currently a zero balance with no patient responsibility. Now ****** is holding my funds hostage because they say there was a service charge that did not get processed on 2-21-2025 so they claim that they sent it to the ***************** on 4-10-2025. For some reason, the insurance company never received it. Claresse called me from ****** and stated that the charge would be resubmitted again today on 4-29-2025. This charge is for a refraction that was done on 2-21-2025 which has nothing to do with the services of 1-8-2025 which I paid for. In addition after looking at the charges for 1-8-2025, ****** charged me for a Test to determine if prescription eye wear is needed(92015). The office visit was to determine if I needed cataract surgery not for if I needed glasses. I gave them my prescription glasses which I was wearing so obviously I need prescription eye wear. On January 9th I was charged for a surgery that was not done at all. Upon bringing it to their attention I was immediately told there was no mistake and the charges stick. I have proof there was no surgery done yet nobody will correct the billing. I have been given the run around and have still not been provided with the surgical consent that I obviously did not sign. Charlotte Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Associates (CEENTA) sent me an invoice for an "estimated payment" on 10/9/24 for services that would be rendered on 10/23/24, saying if payment wasn't received that I may not be provided services. I paid the $692.28 on 10/16/24 in good faith. My ****************** *******, has since paid the entire bill in full and on 1/27/25 has closed the 10/23/24 claim from ******, so CEENTA owes me a refund of the "estimated payment". ****** insists that my insurance company sent a letter on 2/12/25 indicating "investigation or reprocessing" is required and called me on 2/17/25 to tell me as much. Today, 2/21/25 I called ***************** and they have no records whatsoever for reprocessing of any claims, and since ******* paid the ****** claim on 1/27/25 they consider the claim closed. CEENTA still insists there is a reprocessing and will not agree to refund me, even after informing them that even thought the claim was paid and closed, if there is still an issue they need to deal directly with my insurance company, refund me my payment and remove me from the equation. My patience has worn out so I am now reporting CEENTA to the BBB for fraudulent billing practices.Business Response

If there is a patient balance after the insurance pays, then they can bill me. October 4th 2024. Billed for no show. ( *****). I missed an appt and paid a ***** ******* fee. Af t er the fact!!!!!, I was billed a second no show fee of ***** for the same day. In all.the information concerning this practice it says you owe a ***** ******* fee. It does not clarify that they may have scheduled a patient with two appts on that visit. I was charged a second ***** no show fee for a total of ****** for one day. They have sent this amount to collections. I want it removed from collections and the second ***** fee deleted from my account. I live on ***** a day. I don't have ***** to pay this ***** bill. Maybe they should live on ***** a day. This amount is arbitrary and not explained to the patient. When I called to cancel this appt I was told there would be a ***** no show fee which I paid. I have tried to.resolve this issue numerous times. Their resolution was to report my bill to a collection agency. My son is a patient at this practice, and I am extremely dissatisfied with how his recent insurance situation was handled. I received a call stating his appointment needed to be canceled because the office no longer accepts his secondary insurance. However, my son has both primary and secondary insurance. At his last visit, I was assured that having a primary insurance plan would be sufficient. On January 1, when his insurance plan updated, I provided the staff with his new primary medical ID. While it could not be pulled up in their system, I contacted the insurance company, which stated that eligibility could not be verified through the system but that the office could call directly to verify benefits. I provided the insurance companys contact information, but I was informed that the office "will not do that." *********** refuses to call to verify benefits? In December, this same primary insurance was verified with no problem. He just has an updated member ID for the plan year. Refusing to make a simple call to verify benefits feels lazy and unprofessional. To make matters worse, I offered to self-pay to ensure my son could still receive care, but the office ignored this option. I was instead told that because the secondary insurance is not accepted, the primary insurance would not be accepted either. The office manager instructed the staff to cancel the appointment entirely. This practices actions are unacceptable. Denying care to a patient, especially a child, is unprofessional and lacks compassion. As a result, I will be cutting ties with this office as both a parent and a patient. This experience has been incredibly disappointing, and I feel the office staff has failed to uphold basic standards of care.Business Response

CEENTA billed me a $50 no-show fee for an appointment I never agreed to or scheduled. Despite providing clear evidence of their error and requesting a correction through their patient messaging portal, ****** has failed to respond within their stated 48-hour response timeframe. This is indicative of a troubling pattern in CEENTAs billing practices, which disproportionately harm patients, particularly seniors, who may lack the resources to fight back against unjust charges.Complaint Details 1.What Happened:On December 16, 2024, I contacted ****** through their patient portal to inquire about scheduling an appointment with Dr. ********* *****.A staff member (*** *.) informed me that Dr. ***** was unavailable and offered an appointment with Dr. ******* *****. I explicitly declined this offer, as documented in my response.Despite my clear refusal, CEENTA improperly scheduled an appointment with Dr. ***** for December 17, 2024, and subsequently billed me a $50 no-show fee for failing to attend this unauthorized appointment.2.What I Have Done:I contacted CEENTA through their messaging portal to dispute this charge and provided evidence of the error.Despite their promise to respond within ************************************************* corrected the charge.3.Why This Matters:CEENTAs refusal to resolve this error reflects a broader issue with their aggressive billing practices, which disproportionately harm seniors and vulnerable *********** a senior citizen, I am capable of advocating for myself, but many elderly patients may not have the resources or ability to dispute unjust charges, leading to undue financial and emotional distress.Desired Resolution 1.I request that CEENTA immediately remove the improper $50 no-show charge from my *********** also encourage ****** to review its billing practices to ensure that other patients, particularly seniors, are not subjected to similar unjust charges in the future.Business Response

I had a surgery in July of 2024. Due to financial hardships (which has led to bankruptcy), my account unfortunately accured a bad debt. I simply couldn't pay the balance owed. I am now however on an automatic-draft repayment plan; yet I am still being refused care. While billing has accepted my bi-weekly repayment amount, they refuse to remove the "bad debt" notification on my account. Despite literally having an appointment on 11/26/24 (while on the repayment plan); I am unable to make any more appointments until the debt is paid in full. I think an automatic-draft repayment should show a sign of good-faith for customers to continue care with a specialist. All I'm requesting is for the bad-debt note on the account to be redacted for continued care.Business Response
