BBB promotes truth in advertising by contacting advertisers whose claims conflict with the BBB Code of Advertising. These claims may come to our attention from our internal review of advertising, consumer complaints and competitor challenges. BBB asks advertisers to prove their claims, change ads to make offers more clear to consumers, and remove misleading or deceptive statements
On February 7, 2025 and February 25, 2025, BBB asked for the business’s voluntary cooperation with regard to the business’s use of a “Certified Green Professional” seal on its website. BBB requested that the business update their website to clarify what specific environmental benefits the seal refers to. BBB’s Code of Advertising, section 36, states that Advertisers should not make broad, unqualified general environmental benefit claims like “green” or “eco-friendly” and that a business must qualify general claims with specific environmental benefits. In addition, environmental certifications and seals that do not clearly convey the basis for the certification are likely to convey general environmental benefits. Because claims making general environmental benefits should not be used (see section 36.1) advertisers must clearly and conspicuously disclose the specific and limited benefits to which the certificate or seal applies.
As of this date, BBB has not received a response from the business nor has the advertising been modified.
