I was referred by my neurologist to Ubylee for pain management purposes starting around June 2024. For the year of 2024, my balance due for most visits came to approximately $32.00. In April 2025, I was given a bill in the amount of $745.15. I worked with UnitedHealthcare (UHC) to discover that Ubylee was billing $600 per visit for what should be deemed as unnecessary drug screening. Ubylee states that these amounts were billed each visit but I did not see them because I met my deductible in 2024 when I began services. Ubylee billed $200 and $400 each visit for drug screening which UHC paid $168.31 and $320.14 respectively. *** even deemed the amounts charged and Ubylee's reasoning behind it as excessive and unneeded. I do not have a history of drug abuse and never screened positive for any other substances in my system so being screened every visit and being charged this amount is borderline billing and insurance fraud. Ubylee passed it off as a necessary precursor to each visit and standard protocol. Had I been aware that I could have waived having these tests performed, I would have done so. I am disputing the charges for drug testing but will pay for the remaining services performed which should adjust my bill to $129.86. Most medical facilities provide patient portals so you can view your health records, billing and visits. Ubylee does not offer this and has no email address. You are unable leave a message with anyone after hours. Their billing is handled by a 3rd party agency and when calling for information and clarity, both claim they can't provide detailed billing information upon request. This business doesn't seem very upfront or transparent about their practice.

Unfortunately due to **** privacy regulations we are unable to address or disclose private medical details on this specific patient. The practice sees highly complicated and high risk chronic pain patients many of which suffer mental health issues and are on multiple controlled substances. In order to mitigate against diversion and identify potential substance abuse disorders the practice has a strict process of monitoring such patients on a regular basis. This care plan results in an excellent safety record in spite of a national opioid crisis. The practice receives consultation requests from many providers and accepts high risk patients independent of their insurance status and has no control over which insurance plans patients maintain and the applicable deductibles that patients and their plans are responsible for. Billing processes are very transparent and patients receive regular statements with toll free numbers to get questions answered. Despite best efforts, some patients refuse to accept responsibility for their insurance deductibles and balances due claiming to be unaware of balances left them by their insurance carriers. The practice obtains patient signatures as party of the regular intake process wherein patients are notified of any outstanding balances. Patients retain the right to change providers or resource another practice and we encourage patients to locate a practice that fits their needs. Often when this occurs, patients use the opportunity to not make a final payment on care delivered them.

Unfortunately the full details as supported by the medical record cannot be fully disclosed due to HIPPA privacy regulations.

We wish this patient well as she has requested self-discharge for insurance reasons.

We also stand by our history of excellence in care and safety for some of the regions most complicated and high risk chronic pain and injury patients.

By submission of this message, I hereby waive my rights under ***** regulations to have the BBB investigate this matter & access my billing and health records.  As stated in my original complaint, Ubylee is conducting unnecessary drug testing &were paid by my United Healthcare.  Representatives of *** reviewed the charges by Ubylee deemed them excessive.  Monthly testing was not necessary since I was not a "high risk" patient & had no history of opioid or drug abuse.  I am on the lowest dosage of Tramadol & on Gabapentine for over 2 years & again with no history of misuse of these drugs. Injections received at their facility weren't conducted in a sterile environment.  This does not support their statement of delivery excellent care & safety.  I was not aware of any bills for the year of 2024 &on average paid $32 per visit.  It wasn't until March 2025 where I began to see bills and was informed by their billing dept/3rd party agency that the remaining balance is because I did not meet my deductible.  I self-discharged from Ubylee after seeing their questionable billing practices. I am with a new pain management facility & when I told them the reason why I left Ubylee, my provider agreed that the type and amount of testing was unnecessary in my case.  Attached articles show that this is becoming an epidemic within the healthcare system of pain management facilities and doctors ordering unnecessary tests and excessively testing for the sole purpose of financial gain.  If Ubylee refuses to settle this fairly and excuse the drug charges and adjust my account accordingly, I will move forward with reporting Ubylee to the *** and any other healthcare agencies to conduct an investigation into their billing practices.  Most of Ubylee's clientele are elderly or poor and they are taking advantage of the healthcare system, and I believe at this point, they need to be thoroughly investigated.
