I am a Cyber Crime Technology student at *************************** and a 21-year ** Army veteran. I am on a limited VA disability income. At the beginning of the summer semester, I was attempting to get the course materials needed for my class, CET 130 (NYE01) Operating System Principles, which is an introduction to Linux. At the time, it seemed that I would need either a hard copy of the textbook or the e-book version, as we do for the majority of our courses. We also had to register with Red Hat Training, so I ordered an e-text copy, which came from ********************* through Red Hat. In the meantime, the course was posted in Blackboard and I found that we had the Red Hat e-text available in Blackboard as part of the course. I have made several attempts to plead my case for a refund of the $53.38, but to no avail. One of the representatives finally sent me the following:Red Hat Academy will not accept returns of printed books unless damaged in transit. Only e-book codes that have not been redeemed are eligible for cancellation or return, subject to terms and conditions. This was not a condition of which I was aware and used the code to get the e-book but requested the refund the next day. I explained the situation, but they would not do anything to help. I asked another representative if I had simply lost my money, and she adamantly said yes. Had I known this would be an issue, I would not have ordered the e-book. Additionally, I found that only 5 pages can be printed at one time and the e-book is over 600 pages. I dont feel like this is a fair business practice and I am not making any attempts to take advantage of Red Hat. I believe that my request for a refund is reasonable. What was needed for the course, Red Hat registration, registration for our labs (through another company), and attempting to communicate with them is somewhat confusing and frustrating.

Thank you for submitting this complaint. Based on the written complaint, I understand that this student from *************************** is upset about a charge they incurred when they ordered additional ebook materials from our Red Hat Academy partner *********************. It may take our team a couple of days to investigate this issue but we are happy to look into it. Upon my initial assessment of the situation, it sounds like the student will need to work directly with ********************* (a separate organization from Red Hat) to obtain a refund. It also sounds like the student has been in contact with them already. From Red Hat Academy's side, there are a couple of things we can do. We will reach out to our contact at ********************* to see if there is anything we can do to help this student in their efforts to obtain a refund. We cannot guarantee anything as the ebook was purchased through *********************. Red Hat Academy is a free program that provides curriculum and lab resources directly to schools for use with degree-seeking students. We do not sell the ebooks that this student purchased (indicated on the student's receipt by noting that the payment will go to ******* **). However, we do want to help this student if we are able and will connect the student with our contact at ********************* to see what they can do in regards to a refund. Additionally, we will be sure to follow up with the student's instructor at *************************** to ensure that they understand and can communicate to students in the future that Red Hat Academy's free resources include the online ebook (HTML version).

I am rejecting this response because:

*************************** is not upset over this issue. I am upset over the entire process and requests made for the refund and obtaining the refund. I have contact Global and they will not approve the refund because they claim it's Red Hat's policy that prohibits the refund. They directed me to contact Red Hat.

      Sincerely,

      *****************************

Thanks so much for the detailed response *****. That is correct. The **** version of the textbook is provided at no cost in the "course" tab once the student clicks into the course via the "launch" button. Thank you for helping reiterate to students that this resource is available for free and that they do not need to purchase additional book resources unless they want to. The "online books" tab of the course is there for students who may want or need to purchase a different format of the book for any reason.
***** and ******* - Please let me know if there are any other questions I can answer for you.
