***** gave us an estimate on 10/15/23 and was paid in full for 2 jobs. The first was the purchase & installation of 3 interior wood doors for $1,960.00, paid 10/31/23. In Dec. 2023 I was notified by his employee that ***** ordered Oak doors & trim. ***** was specifically instructed to order the exact same doors that were previously there and are also throughout the entire house. The oak doors & trim are more expensive, won’t stain the same to match the others, especially since the doors throughout the house are Birch. Also, I bought the door knobs & stain so this would be subtracted from his estimate. I repeatedly requested a detailed paid invoice showing the breakdown for each item. Over the last 9 months I made 4 trips to NE to get the doors installed, based on dates ***** gave me, costing me $4,000. The last trip I scheduled only after ***** gave me a definitive date the doors would be installed, July 15. No one showed up to pick up the stain nor on the install date. I contacted ***** many times via text & phone calls. He has not responded. Now more than 10 months later, ***** has not installed the doors or refunded any of our money after repeated requests for a full refund.

For the second job they were hired to install an exterior house door & were paid $1,270.00 on 10/27/23. The door install estimate was $990.00, so they were overpaid. The door was installed on 10/31/23. The door was warped & had additional defects as well. When they initially noticed this they should have discontinued work and called the company the door was ordered from, not continued to put on the interior trim work. They damaged the drywall and did not fix it, the trim work & painting was not completed, and the wrong door bell was installed. All of this needs to be subtracted from the $1,270.00 ***** was paid. Nothing has been done to replace the door or finish the work, nor can I get a response from ***** regarding the refund we’re owed, even after many attempts at contacting him.

    Business Response

    Date: 09/04/2024

From the very beginning, ***** told me she wanted to be onsite while construction work was being completed.  She lives in California and travels back to her Dad's place here in Nebraska about every 3 to 4 months annually.  She wanted to schedule our work according to her regally scheduled trips.  So we did.  Her statements about extra trips here and costing $4,000.00 are simply not true.  These trips are her normal routine.

***** hired us first to Install a Exterior Door.  We picked it up and installed it. The door came with a warped door panel and could not be installed to close properly. We had 2 options at this point.  First, adjust the framing of the new door panel to get it to close.  Second option was to remove the new door and reinstall the old door that we just took out.  This second option was not doable due to the door most likely had been in the house since the early 1980's was was in terrible condition.  The frame work of the original door was rotten and could not be reinstalled.  First option was the only option and ***** agreed to this.  ***** also did not want the trim work put on around the new door because she was going to dispute the new door quality.  This was all done by her decisions, we gave her both options and she instructed us to leave the new door in with no trim work and not install the old rotted door.  She has a new replacement door waiting to be installed from the manufacturer, But we have decided to move away from this client due to fact she doesn't stay true in her decisions and changes her mind with no cost in mind and wants things done at the same price.

The interior doors complaint is very simple.  I gave ***** 3 estimates for the Unfinished basement where these doors are to be installed. 1- Doors estimate, 2- Framing/finshing  Estimate main room, 3- Framing/finishing estimate machinal room.  Estimate 1 was approved to do and these we special ordered doors for the sizes required.  ***** wanted to keep the cost down so the oak doors were ordered in leu of the pine doors since they were $60.00 dollars each cheaper than the pine. I told ***** we need to do the other estimates first before we do the doors.  The doors should be the last thing completed.  ***** told me that she had no intension of doing estimates 2 or 3 and was just needing the estimate cost to turn in to collect the insurance money.  The basement at some point had a pipe break and had water damage which lead to these estimates.   As far as the Staining, ***** never did pick out the stain until July of 2024 on her regularly scheduled visit.    At this point of picking out the stain she had specific instructions on how to do the stain.  There was no chance we would stain these doors to her liking.  We delivered the new doors to the home in July and placed them inside the garage for safe keeping.

We will send her a refund for the labor part on these doors since we are not installing them, but the special ordered doors are hers and cannot b returned.

Finally, ***** told me in November of 2023 that I was the 38th or 39th Contractor she has had in less than 2 years on this project.  Huge Red Flag for us.  She cannot be satisfied no matter what!

    Complaint: ********

I am rejecting this response because:

    THE FACTS:
***** is an UNlicensed and UNregistered contractor. His license expired Aug. 2021, yet has been working since then. This is easily verified by calling the NE Department of Labor or verified on their website.

I have every text and email to & from ***** from the last 10 months. Photos, texts and emails do not lie.

***** was specifically instructed to order the same wood doors previously in the basement and throughout the house. He did not.

***** was told multiple times that the insurance co. only authorized the same, exact doors for replacement, which were Birch, not Pine as he stated.

Oak wood does not stain the same as Birch, which is another reason why ***** was told to order the exact same doors.

Oak is more expensive than Birch.

***** told me he buys products at **** ***** and **** ******, but never from ********.
He told me he would order a quality, name brand door. He ordered them from ******** because it’s a cheaper door, therefore he makes more money. The jambs on the ******** doors are made of particle board, which is not what the current doors throughout the house are made of.

***** told me he would do the stain color match Nov. 2023 so the doors could be installed Dec. 2023, which is what I booked my flight for. He did not do the stain match. Then later found out his stain colors are discontinued.

My flights to NE were based on the specific dates ***** told me the doors would be installed, which was 4 different dates over the last 10 months. They were not installed when he told me, with the last date being July 15. Again, I have texts and emails stating this.

We waited 10 months for ***** to install the doors.

Without permission, someone from Knight Construction dropped off 3 doors and trim on Aug. 1. No one was home at the time, which means they were trespassing. Not only did they drive on private property, they went inside a closed garage, which is a legal offense.

Per ****** (Millwork dept. at *******) the doors can be returned. ****** also verified this with the customer service desk.

***** owes us $1,960.00 for the doors that he was paid on 10/31/23. He can then contact me via text or email to make arrangements for his employees to pick them up.

As far as the exterior door, we were given No options in regard to the installation. ***** made all the decisions. As soon as they noticed there were problems with the door they should have stopped work and immediately called **** ****** so they could have looked at it. And as previously stated, they should not have installed the interior trim the next day, knowing there was a long list of problems with the door. We should not be charged for the installation of the interior trim, which we told them not to install. Also the estimate included painting the trim, which was not done, so would also be refunded from the money ***** was paid.

***** was paid $1,270.00 for the front door installation. The estimate was $990.00, which means he automatically owed a refund of $280,.00, plus he owes for the cost to repair the drywall they damaged, the work that was not completed, the wrong doorbell that was installed, and the doorknob I purchased. ***** has not refunded any money and continues to refuse to provide any receipts or documentation that I’ve requested for 10 months, which is the only way to accurately calculate the refund.

Unless ***** has something to hide, receipts and invoices should automatically be supplied.

We’ve tried to resolve this with ***** amicably, but he refused to respond, provide any documentation or refund any money. The only reason he’s responding now is due to the complaint filed against him.

In response to ******* other comments, which have nothing to do with this complaint:
Evidently ***** doesn’t understand how insurance works. The insurance co. is the one that told me to get estimates for everything that was damaged, whether we planned to replace it or not. (and I have an email stating that).  That’s how replacement coverage works. ***** knew the other estimates were not being done. The only thing he was hired to do in the basement was install the doors.

As far as the number of workers (not contractors) over the last almost 3 years, there were a lot between the restoration, cleaners, and every possible trade. Funny thing is, ***** is the one that asked me where I found some of these trades because of the poor job they did, and he pointed out problems with their work.

The damage wasn’t from a pipe break, so ***** can’t even keep his stories straight.
