Subject: Complaint Against Ray’s Lawn Service – Invoice *******  Dear BBB Representative,

I am writing to file a formal complaint against Ray’s Lawn Service regarding unauthorized services and unresolved issues with their lawn care services in 2024 and 2025. Below is a detailed account of my experience.

In 2023, I contracted Ray’s Lawn Service for a yearly lawn fertilization package, which I was satisfied with. Based on this positive experience, I engaged their services again in 2024 for the same fertilization package. However, during the 2024 season, I encountered significant issues. Weeds began appearing in my lawn, and I contacted Ray’s to address the problem. They informed me they would perform a “spot treatment” but prioritized other customers who had purchased their premium package, placing me last on their list. While I accepted this, I also paid for an additional overseeding service.

Unfortunately, the overseeding did not yield results. When I raised this concern with the owner, Larry, he attributed the failure to inadequate watering on my part. This explanation was inaccurate, as my lawn is equipped with an underground sprinkler system, and I followed Ray’s watering instructions precisely. Despite my dissatisfaction, I paid the full 2024 invoice and chose to cancel their services moving forward.
In 2025, without my authorization or consent, Ray’s Lawn Service began fertilizing my lawn again. On May 1, 2025, I received an invoice ******* for $92.00 for these unsolicited services. I had not contracted or requested their services for 2025, and I am concerned about this unauthorized activity.

I request they cancel the unauthorized 2025 invoice ******* Additionally, I seek acknowledgment of the issues with the 2024 services, particularly the ineffective overseeding, and a refund for that portion of the 2024 service, which did not meet reasonable expectations.
I can be reached on ************ for any further information or clarification.

    Business Response

    Mr. Harder -

I'm sorry you feel this way.  When we first started service for your lawn it was a complete mess.  The grass was very thin and full of weeds and not just oridinary dandilions, it had lots of violets and clover.  Violets are one of the hardest weeds to get rid of and most other companies charge extra due to the expense of the special herbicide to get rid of them.  We do not charge extra and we battled them and cleared them up from the yard in 2023.  We also roto-tilled the backyard and seeded it in the fall of 2023 with a fairly decent result.  We started servicing the lawn again in 2024 and we spot spray weeds each and every time we serviced the lawn in 2024.  Weeds mainly grow due to lack of water, lawns that are watered well generally don't get many weeds and we have NEVER had a premium package offered at an additional cost that would provide better weed control so being told that you would be at the bottom of a list just wouldn't have happened.  As I stated before we spot spray weeds each time we are doing an application on a property at no additional cost.

On August 28, 2024 we performed what we consider a simple overseeding which is an aerification, applying quality seed and turf slicing the seed into the soil.  On September 19, 2024 I returned to check for seed germination.  I have several pictures showing a beautiful weed free lawn.  The new seedlings were up and growing because they were getting watered properly.  There were a couple very small corners that are easily seen in the photographs where the grass was very dry or non-existent becasue of a lack of water at seeding time due to improper coverage of the sprinkler system.

*** ****** had called me in November 2024 with concerns about the new grass not filling in.  I stated that I had seen the grass in September and it was looking very good although it was to late to do anything about thickening it up at that point of time and he had to be patient and see what happens in the spring of 2025.  We send out a pre-payment option letters in January each year and if you want to cancel your service you must do so at that time or we re-start the services as we did.  This is a industry standard and has been for many years.

I have attached photo's that show what the lawn looked like in October 2022 as well as the new seedlings in September 2024 and if you remember we were in a drough last fall so I don't know if the new seedlings were watered as directed late into the fall as new seedling typically won't survive a drought is not watered properly.

We have extensively looked through our phone records and emails and have not found any cancellation request from *** ****** this year other than on 4/7/25 after the lawn application was done on 4/4/25.  We will remove the cost for that application to resolve this matter.

    Better Business Bureau:

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID ********, and find that this resolution is satisfactory to me.

A new invoice showing a zero balance in the mail would be fantastic, thanks for getting this resolved, it's unfortunate that we had to involve a third party but I'm satisfied that is now taken care of.

    Sincerely,
